Film "Rust and Bone" 2013-04-03 19:00:00
Description

RUST AND BONE

Director: Jacques Audiard

France, 2012, 123 min; French with subtitles; 18A

“A powerhouse!” –Los Angeles Times

“One of the year’s best films!” –Salon

“A film thrillingly raw and essential, life-affirming, sublime.”

--Philadelphia Inquirer

WINNER! BEST PICTURE! –BFI London Film Festival

Stéphanie (Marion Cotillard) faces many challenges. First, she works at a marine park on the Côte d’Azur, where she trains killer whales to obey her commands. Second, she tries to tame a man named Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts. Ali’s résumé is not a pretty one: bouncer, boxer, bare-knuckle fighter, bored security guard.

Yet this is a love story, of a brutish kind. After Stéphanie is badly disabled in an accident, and shorn of hope, it is Ali who offers her salvation. “Rust and Bone” might as well be called “Water and Light”; it glitters and flares with the urge to renew those things—limbs, knuckles, lovemaking, and parental bonds—which are easily fractured and lost.

Only the toughest viewer can withhold sympathy for Cotillard, whose proud and pleading gaze would have made her a star in the silent era. –The New Yorker

Lecture/Seminar Creating Space for Eco in the Social Economy: A Critical and Constructive Conversation 2013-04-03 09:30:00
Description

The social economy is a third sector of the economy, besides the public and private sectors, that provides critical social and economic services to society.  Though there is broad recognition that both society and economy are dependent on functioning and healthy ecosystems, theories and definitions of the social economy rarely include specific reference to environmental and conservation focused activities or outcomes.  This presentation will explore the idea of an eco-social economy that is situated within but also distinguished from the broader social economy.

Presenter: Nathan Bennett, Trudeau and SSHRC Scholar, and Fellow at the Centre for Global Studies and the Centre for Co-operative and Community-Based Economy.

Please RSVP to jswift@uvic.ca

Film 'Children of War' Film Screening 2013-04-03 18:00:00
Description

Film Screening: Children of War produced by Byan Single

This film documents the stories of a group of former child soldiers at the Rachele Rehabilitation Centre in Northern Uganda, discovering the challenges that they faced upon return home from captivity. Their challenges ranged from continued trauma, lack of education and economic security, physical health complications, and community stigmatization.

After three years of filming and collaboration, in 2009 “Children of War” (childrenofwarfilm.com) was completed and screened before world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York City. Subsequently, the film has been honoured with human rights awards around the world, including a Cinema for Peace Justice Award presented by former International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo.

Children of Peace is an organization that was created as a follow up to this film, in order to provide ongoing support to former child soldiers, children born in captivity and child mothers. Jane Ekayu, Executive Director and Founder of Children of Peace, is working hard to ensure that these children and youth are empowered and supported to create a future for themselves. Jane is currently touring the U.S. with Bryan Single to promote the film as well as the work bring done within her organization. Lecture/Seminar Landsdown Lecture- "Everything from nothing, or how our universe was made" 2013-04-03 19:00:00
Description

Landsdowne Public Lecture

Wednesday, April 3rd at 7:00 pm in the Bob Wright Centre, Room A104

Professor Carlos Frenk (Durham University)

Will present a lecture entitled "Everything from nothing, or how our universe was made"

Cosmology confronts some of the most fundamental questions in the whole of science. How and when did our universe begin? What is it made of?  How did galaxies and other structures form?  There has been enormous progress in the past few decades towards answering these questions. For example, recent observations have established that our universe contains an unexpected mix of components: ordinary atoms, exotic dark matter and a new form of energy called dark energy. Gigantic surveys of galaxies reveal how the universe is structured.
Large supercomputer simulations recreate the evolution of the universe and provide the means to relate processes occuring near the beginning with observations of the universe today. A coherent picture of cosmic evolution, going back to a tiny fraction of a second after the Big Bang, is beginning to emerge. However, fundamental issues, like the identity of the dark matter and the nature of the dark energy, remain unresolved.
