Lecture/Seminar You got rhythm? 2013-05-03 15:00:00
Description

Speaker: Buyun Xu

Abstract:

The Steady-state Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) is a periodic EEG response elicited by periodic visual stimulation, and is proved to be a useful tool in testing face processing. We compared the SSVEP response to faces and birds and found that participants (non-bird experts) were more responsive to face identity changes than bird identity changes. In another experiment, we found reliable correlation between the SSVEP responses to face identity changes and the scores of the Cambridge Face Memory Tests, suggesting that the SSVEP is a valid tool to measure the neural substrates of face identity processing.

Film "A Royal Affair" 2013-05-03 19:00:00
Description

A ROYAL AFFAIR

Director: Nikolaj Arcel

Denmark, 2012, Danish with subtitles; 138 min; 14A

ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE!  BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

Caught between the Age of Enlightenment and a cloistered world of entitlement, between duty and illicit love, Caroline Mathilde (Alicia Vikander) is the young queen, imported from England, who shares the Danish throne with King Christian VII. In this sumptuous 18th-century drama, she arrives in Copenhagen full of bright-eyed optimism, only to see that her new husband is, um, a twit.

Then Johann Struensee (the charming, slightly sinister Mads Mikkelsen, The Hunt) is hired on as the king's doctor. He becomes the king's personal adviser, too. And then he becomes the king's wife's lover, sneaking into her bedroom. Suddenly, she feels alive again, and important. He, likewise, falls in love…Beautifully staged and shot, A Royal Affair is historical drama of the highest order. –Philadelphia Inquirer
