Understanding Place in Culture: Serigraphs and the Transmission of Cultural Knowledge focuses on how Indigenous perspectives of place shape expressions of important cultural knowledge. All of the serigraphs selected from this collection represent or convey a sense of place in some way, either through a direct representation of a physical location; an image that translates a story about a place; or images that connect (through memory, dreams, etc.) to a specific place.
Museums and other educational institutions are often seen as sites of privileged knowledge production, spaces that have often excluded minority perspectives and realities. These artists challenge the hegemonic practices of institutions, by positioning the artist as the ethnographic authority on their cultural expressions and knowledge.
Admission is Free.
This exhibition showcases serigraphs by Indigenous artists from the coastal areas of British Columbia, and are part of the Smyth and Rickard Collections of Northwest Coast serigraphs. Seven artists from different Indigenous communities are represented in the exhibition: Francis Dick, Maynard Johnny Jr., Edward Joe, Stan Greene, Floyd Joseph, Tim Paul, and Joe David. Selections of audio ‘soundscapes,’ from interviews with Francis Dick and Maynard Johnny Jr., are accessible to visitors via smart phone; the interviews frame the works within the experience of a specific place.

A Child's View From Gaza Exhibition - Tues., Nov. 6 - Tues., Dec. 4, 2012, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (details below)
Public Reception for A Child's View From Gaza - Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, 7:00 p.m. (details below)
Exhibition:
Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME), Victoria Chapter, is delighted to announce the presentation in Victoria of a fascinating and heart-wrenchingly beautiful collection of drawings by children and youth from Gaza. The exhibition, A Child's View from Gaza, features 20 drawings by children in Gaza from 5 to 14 years of age, created during the course of art therapy. The exhibition reflects the children's perceptions of the Israeli offensive against Gaza, which took place from December 27, 2008 to January 17, 2009. Each drawing is unique in its perspective and details.
Public Reception:
CJPME cordially invites you to attend a public reception and viewing of A Child's View From Gaza exhibit, at the A. Wilfrid Johns Gallery, Faculty of Education, MacLaurin Building-A Wing, University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at 7:00 p.m.
There will be a presentation by Dr. Robert Dalton, Art Education Professor, at the University of Victoria. Dr. Dalton's Ph.D. dissertation was focused on the theme of children's war drawings, and since then he has studied collections of drawings from Iraq, Afghanistan and other regions of the world, where the lives of children and youth have been affected by conflict. As well, he has studied art collections where peace, a much more hopeful and uplifting topic, was the theme.
Refreshments will be served. Live Arabic music will be performed. Short film clips (The Future for Gaza's Children-An Interview with Dr. Eyad al-Sarraj, Psychiatrist; Samouni Street; and Gaza: Did You Know?) will be shown. Guests will be invited to participate in an art activity. A Gazan/Palestinian cultural display will be on hand.
CJPME gratefully acknowledges the A. Wilfrid Johns Gallery for providing this venue.

Director: Malik Bendjelloul Sweden/UK, 2012, 87 minutes; PG
WINNER! SPECIAL JURY PRIZE & AUDIENCE AWARDS!
–Sundance Film Festival
“SUPERB!” –San Francisco Chronicle
Music fans will love this indie documentary. Try to avoid Googling him before you watch, though. Some say Mexican-American singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez could have been as big as Dylan, yet his first album bombed on release in 1970s America and he was dropped by his label. But unbeknown to the near-penniless Detroit artist he was a sensation in South Africa, where people grooved to his folk tunes and chanted his anti-establishment lyrics. This is the quest of two South Africans to find their hero, following clues in song lyrics and launching campaigns to discover the fate of the man said to have killed himself on stage. The journey’s a blast — and the story isn’t over yet. A must for music fans! --Empire Sponsored by CFUV 101.9 FM

Said the Whale performing with Special Guests
In the five years since Said The Whale formed, the band's hook-heavy, pop-rock sound has propelled them to successes that include a nationally televised documentary, a JUNO Award victory, and a seemingly endless series of tours around the globe. In an age of overnight internet sensations, theirs is a true grassroots success story that has allowed the group featuring dual frontmen Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester, drummer Spencer Schoening, keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown and bassist Nathan Shaw to take its place among the Canadian indie rock elite.
