IDEA FEST - Religion, Rights and Political Upheaval: Global Currents
A Public Forum with UVic Scholars
The jailing of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, the resurgence of religious protests in Northern Ireland, and demonstrations sparked by an American pastor’s burning of the Qur’an remind us of the tensions that exist between religion and liberal societies. A panel of UVic scholars will examine current global contexts in which religion, rights and politics create often explosive controversies.
Moderator: Paul Bramadat, Centre for Studies in Religion and Society
Panelists:
Sikata Banerjee, Department of Women’s Studies: India
Avigail Eisenberg, Department of Political Science: Canada
Oliver Schmidtke, Centre for Global Studies: European Union
Megan Swift, Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies: Russia
Andrew Wender, Depts. of History and Political Science: Israel

CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS
Werner Herzog Canada/USA, 2010, 90 min, rated G
An exclusive expedition into the nearly inaccessible Chauvet Cave in France, home to the most ancient visual art known to have been created by man. It's an unforgettable cinematic experience that provides a unique glimpse of the pristine artwork dating back to human hands over 30,000 years ago - almost twice as old as any previous discovery. “If you're interested in the history of the human race—if you're a member of the human race—you owe it to yourself to see this movie.” --Slate

Lansdowne Public Lecture
Tuesday, March 5th at 3:30 pm in the Social Sciences and Mathematics Building, Room A102
Professor Timothy Whitmarsh (University of Oxford)
Will present a lecture entitled “Euhemerus Revisited”
Euhemerus is one of the early Hellenistic era’s most tantalising figures. The author of a novelistic travelogue (which survives now only in a summary made by Diodorus of Sicily), he seems to have claimed to have made a radical discovery on an island in the Arabian sea. An inscription stood here, explaining how the figures that the Greeks know as Olympian deities were in fact mortals, who received divine honours thanks to their achievements. In this lecture we’ll see that the Sacred inscription was, amongst other things, a highly sophisticated piece of fictional writing, and pivotal in the history of the novel; and, moreover, that behind the sobriquet ‘Euhemerus’ may lie a better known author.
