Description

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

Director: Hirokazu Kore-eda

Japan, 2013, 121 min; Japanese with subtitles; rated G

One of the great themes of Japanese cinema, and perhaps the greatest, is family. Hirokazu Kore-eda has found a fresh perspective.  Playfulness is the prevailing spirit of the piece: despite the film’s premise, watching it feels like paddling in a clear, sunlit spring. Kore-eda’s film is about two families who discover that their six-year-old boys were switched at birth, and it centres on one of the fathers; a busy architect called Ryota Nonomiya (Masaharu Fukushima). When Kore-eda’s film screened in Cannes, it prompted the loudest reactions: rippling laughter throughout, sustained applause at the close, and a steady refrain of goosey honks as attendees cleared their tear-streaming noses. –The Telegraph

Conference Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement: Implications for British Columbia 2014-05-05 All Day
Description

The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union will grant Canada access to the biggest economy of the world. On Oct. 18, 2013, the agreement was signed in principle, but details are not yet in the public domain. However, it is already clear CETA will impact the relationship between Canada and the EU very substantially. As its name already suggests, CETA goes well beyond trade and addresses foreign direct investment, labour mobility, and public procurement, among other important areas.

This conference is co-hosted by the European Union Centre of Excellence, the Department of Economics, the Department of Political Science, the Faculty of Law and the Gustavson School of Business.

Exhibit Margaret Peterson: A Search In Rhythm 2014-05-05 All Day
Description

A Search In Rhythm features the artworks and personal papers of the groundbreaking mid-20th century abstract painter, Margaret Peterson (1903-1997). Peterson had a big vision: to search for the spiritual realm, in rhythm with the artistic aims of Indigenous peoples across the world. Peterson's main medium was egg tempera on plywood panels—striking in size, colour, and form. By showcasing Peterson's possessions, photographs, and writing about her work alongside the works themselves, her vision and search is more fully realized. This is the first in an upcoming series of exhibitions presenting the University of Victoria's Artist Archives and Legacy Art Galleries joint holdings which demonstrates the rich research potential of this recently acquired material.
