Film "Don Jon" 2013-11-08 15:30:00
Description

Director: Joseph Gordon-Levitt   USA, 2013, 90 min; 18A

Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore

Jon Martello, a bartender from Jersey, is home alone, focusing tight on his computer while hardcore porn images flash in front of him. It's better than the real thing, Jon tells us. Welcome to sex and the single dude as we see it in this bruisingly funny, bracingly smart comic dare that marks a stellar feature directing and writing debut for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays Jon with humor, heat and sneaky heart. Jon’s more eager to jump out of bed with a real live girl and turn on a laptop that always puts him in charge. How did Jon get this way? How did the world? These are the hot topics that pulse through “Don Jon.” The catalyst for change comes in the voluptuous form of Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson). –Rolling Stone

Lecture/Seminar Land Use Planning in the Yukon: The Promise and the Failure 2013-11-08 14:45:00
Description

A Lecture by

Frank Duerden
Adjunct Professor, Department of Geography, UVic

Frank Duerden was centrally involved in the establishment of regional land-use planning in the Yukon.  The planning process promised to incorporate principles of sustainable management and First Nation’s interests.  Over a twenty year period the process has consistently failed to deliver, producing only one implementable plan. The history, structure and performance of regional land-use planning in the Yukon is outlined, and two contemporary plans reviewed to illustrate the difficulties of planning in a region with widely diverse attitudes towards land and resources.

Theatre PHOENIX THEATRE: The Skin of Our Teeth @8pm 2013-11-08 20:00:00
Description

THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH

By Thornton Wilder
Directed by Linda Hardy

Enter New Jersey suburbia: home of the perfect middle class family, George, his wife Maggie, their children Gladys and Henry (previously known as Cain?), and their pet dinosaur. George is the inventor of the alphabet, the wheel, and the multiplication tables – he’s the pick of the human race! But can the family survive the ravages of ice ages, global warming, storms, floods, depressions and war? Absurdly funny and very profound, this 1943 Pulitzer Prize-winning satire from the author of Our Town takes us on a wild and raucous tour through the ages.  Revolutionary when first written, The Skin of Our Teeth is a play for our time.

Lecture/Seminar Accounting for Meaning in Human Thinking: The Development of Pointing Gestures in Infancy 2013-11-08 15:00:00
Description

Speaker: Professor Jeremy Carpendale, Simon Fraser University

Abstract:

Pointing is an early example of infants’ emerging skills in conveying meaning.  In spite of agreement regarding the importance of pointing in infant development there is still controversy regarding how infants master this social act.  Although gestures such as pointing are apparently simple acts of communication they raise complex issues regarding the nature and development of social skills in conveying meaning.  Theories of language and cognition are based on assumptions regarding meaning.  I will review and critique a common view of meaning and consider an alternative account, which I will illustrate with observations from a longitudinal, multiple case, diary study of infant communicative development.
