Film "Warm Bodies" 2013-04-09 21:30:00
Description

WARM BODIES

Jonathan Levine   USA, 2013, 98 min; PG

FOUR STARS! The cause of the zombie apocalypse in this rom-zom-com is our addiction to technology. Nicholas Hoult combines lurching and drooling with an understated wit and concern that there might be more to life than eating people. Thus his strange urge to protect Teresa Palmer’s Julie instead of feasting on her cerebrum. A surprisingly universal tale. Warm is the right word. --Empire

Lecture/Seminar Subatomic Smash: The Quest for the Higgs Boson 2013-04-09 19:00:00
Description

April 9, 2013 (doors open at 6:30 pm; 7:00-9:00 pm) | David Lam Auditorium, MacLaurin building A144

Since the discovery of the electron more than one hundred years ago, the exploration of the subatomic world has had a profound impact on human knowledge. Physicists have recently found a new subatomic particle that is widely believed to be the hypothesized Higgs boson.

This public presentation by Dr. Michel Lefebvre will take you on a journey inside the atom, into the realm of the fundamental building blocks of matter and the interactions between them. Seize the opportunity to delve into experimental particle physics at the energy frontier with the Large Hadron Collider and the ATLAS detector, marvels of modern technology operating as the largest and most powerful microscope ever built.

UVic physicists are founding members of the ATLAS Collaboration, which built the equipment and collected the data used in the search for the Higgs boson. The recent discovery and further exploration of this particle will greatly expand our understanding of the Universe.

Follow the quest and bring your questions.

Lecture/Seminar "Functions of adult hippocampal neurogenesis in memory and mood" 2013-04-09 13:00:00
Description

Please join us for the next Division of Medical Sciences Seminar on Tuesday, April 9th with guest lecturer Dr. Jason Snyder, Ph.D. UBC, Department of Psychology.

Dr. Snyder's research is to identify the behavioural function of adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus. Given the history of hippocampal memory research, it is not surprising that initial studies of adult neurogenesis reported functions in learning and memory. However, a parallel avenue of research has implicated adult neurogenesis is emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression. How do we reconcile these diverse behavioural roles? Our current view is that adult neurogenesis may be particularly important for behaviour under conditions of stress. We have found that neurogenesis is modulated by stress, new neurons have unique properties in the hippocampal subregion that regulates stress, and blocking adult neurogenesis increases glucocorticoids and depressive behaviour following acute stress. Thus, stress has the potential to bridge the seemingly-disparate roles for new neurons in memory and mood-related behaviours.

Film "AMOUR" 2013-04-09 19:00:00
Description

AMOUR

Director: Michael Haneke

France, 2012, 128 min; French with subtitles; PG

ACADEMY AWARD WINNER! BEST FOREIGN FILM

WINNER! PALME D’OR –Cannes Film Festival

A masterpiece from Michael Haneke (Caché) about the closing days of a great romance. The French legends Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva co-star as a couple in their 80s who have lived in love together for decades, but now their time together begins to end. Such a story is not melodrama. Nor is it tragedy. It is just about the way things are. A profound and uplifting masterpiece. FOUR STARS!  –Roger Ebert
