Film "Frances Ha" 2013-09-13 19:10:00
Description

Director: Noah Baumbach   USA, 2012, 86 min; 14A

Effortless and effervescent, "Frances Ha" is a small miracle of a movie, honest and funny with an aim that's true. It's both a timeless story of the joys and sorrows of youth and a dead-on portrait of how things are right now for one particular New York woman who can't quite get her life together. If anyone lives completely in the moment, it is Frances, a 27-year-old apprentice dancer who is so many often contradictory things at once. Feckless and rootless, gawky and graceful, over-analytical and uncertain, always apologizing yet often oblivious, Frances is making a hash out of her own life. And yet she is unmistakably good-hearted, and it is impossible not to root for her as she throws herself into life and tries to determine if there can be a place there for her. –Los Angeles Times

“I defy anyone to watch the movie without smiling.”Washington Post

Description

A Dialogue on Aging, Developmental Disabilities and Dementia

Introduction…
Roy I. Brown, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Calgary & Adjunct Professor, University of Victoria, Director, IASSIDD Academy.

Speakers…
Seth M. Keller, M.D., Neurologist and Past–President of the American Academy
of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry, and co-chair of the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices in the USA

Matthew P. Janicki, Ph.D., Research Associate Professor, University of Illinois
at Chicago, and co-chair of the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices in the USA

Nigel J. Livingston, Ph.D., Founder of CanAssist and Professor, University of Victoria, BC , Canada

The workshop will cover issues related to the changing nature of Canada’s population and the emerging ‘grey wave’, fundamentals of how people with lifelong neurodevelopmental disability
are affected by aging, and thoughts about how assessment is carried out with older adults with neurodevelopmental conditions who experience functional decline. There will also be a dialogue
on the nature of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and how communities and the support system can prepare for its growing impact. Technologies directed at increasing the independence and quality of life of those living with disabilities will also be discussed.

The workshop should be of interest to family members of persons with lifelong neurodevelopmental conditions, workers in the disability, aged care, and health sectors, professionals, and administrators.

Lecture/Seminar Human Optophysiology 2013-09-13 15:00:00
Description

Speaker: Kyle Mathewson, Beckman Institute Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alberta.

Abstracts

Why is all human skin tinted red? Biological molecules selectively absorb and scatter light of particular wavelengths. Interestingly, human biological tissue for the most part is transparent to light in the near-infrared range (650-1000 nm), providing what is essentially a window, through which we can peer to better understand human physiological function. For example, we use near-infrared laser diodes to illuminate the human cortex, and measure the properties of the diffused light to estimate hemodynamic and neuronal activity. We have recently shown that optical brain imaging can measure coherent oscillatory alpha activity associated with attention. Recent advances in flexible electronics have provided the opportunity to develop less invasive and more portable optical imaging devices. We have performed early tests of this developing technology in cognitive tasks. Finally, since we are constantly being illuminated with natural and artificial light from a variety of sources, it may be possible to reconstruct some aspect of physiology from a simple video of an individual. Perhaps we are all performing Optophysiolgy when we look at each other.
