Theatre PHOENIX THEATRE: Good Person of Setzuan @8pm 2012-11-13 20:00:00
Description

Good Person of Setzuan
by Bertolt Brecht

Three gods arrive in a large manufacturing-based city in search of one good person. A young prostitute, Shen Teh, is granted a new life and the ownership of her own tobacco shop for an act of kindness to the gods. She strives to be a ”good person” in a world based on theft, deceit and corruption, where everyone takes advantage of her generosity. To avoid financial ruin, she invents Shui Ta –  a shrewd, no-nonsense male cousin to protect her business interests. Set in modern-day, industrial China, Brecht’s famous play maintains its relevance as a parable on how to be a good person in an imperfect, money-centric, class-divided society.

Lecture/Seminar The Ugly Canadian: Stephen Harper''s Foreign Policy - Yves Engler 2012-11-13 19:00:00
Description

Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East is pleased to announce that it is sponsoring a series of lectures across Canada by activist and author Yves Engler. Mr. Engler's latest book - The Ugly Canadian: Stephen Harper's Foreign Policy - has just been released. The focus of the lectures will be the Harper government's uncritical defence of Israel's flouting of international law and its promotion of mining and oil projects with devastating environmental and social consequences. Other themes in Mr. Engler's book and which he will undoubtedly touch on during his talks are Canadian foreign policy regarding Haiti and Latin America as well as increasing Canadian international militarism and corporatism.

"Canadians are eager to be a force for peace and justice in the world, but, as Engler's research powerfully documents, the Harper government is implementing policies with the opposite effect," says CJPME President Thomas Woodley. CJPME notes that the Harper government pursues neither "balance" nor a principled emphasis on "human rights" in its foreign policy. Nowhere is that more apparent than in its approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one of the topics covered in Engler's latest book.  Engler vividly demonstrates this absence of balances and principles in other key areas of Harper's foreign policy as well.

Although scarcely off the press, The Ugly Canadian (Fernwood Publishing) has already garnered praise from figures as diverse as Council of Canadians Chairperson Maude Barlow, UBC Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law Michael Byers, and Esprit de Corps Magazine Editor Scott Taylor.

CJPME-Victoria Chapter is delighted to welcome Mr. Engler to Victoria, to speak on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at 7:00 p.m., in Room C122, David Strong Building, University of Victoria Campus.  CJPME gratefully acknowledges the Social Justice Studies Program at the University of Victoria for co-sponsoring this event.

Engler has written six other books, four of them examining various aspects of Canadian foreign policy. Engler's books have been extolled by Noam Chomsky, Naomi Klein, Rick Salutin and many other renowned analysts. His Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy was shortlisted for the Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-Fiction in the Quebec Writers' Federation Literary Awards.

About CJPME - Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is a non-profit, secular, bilingual organisation bringing together people of all backgrounds who labour to see justice and peace take root again in the Middle East. Its mission is to empower decision-makers to view all sides with fairness and to promote the equitable and sustainable development of the region.  www.cjpme.org

Exhibit A Child's View From Gaza - Exhibition 2012-11-13 09:00:00
Description

A Child's View From Gaza Exhibition - Tues., Nov. 6 - Tues., Dec. 4, 2012, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (details below)

Public Reception for A Child's View From Gaza - Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, 7:00 p.m. (details below)

Exhibition:
Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME), Victoria Chapter, is delighted to announce the presentation in Victoria of a fascinating and heart-wrenchingly beautiful collection of drawings by children and youth from Gaza. The exhibition, A Child's View from Gaza, features 20 drawings by children in Gaza from 5 to 14 years of age, created during the course of art therapy. The exhibition reflects the children's perceptions of the Israeli offensive against Gaza, which took place from December 27, 2008 to January 17, 2009. Each drawing is unique in its perspective and details.

Public Reception:
CJPME cordially invites you to attend a public reception and viewing of A Child's View From Gaza exhibit, at the A. Wilfrid Johns Gallery, Faculty of Education, MacLaurin Building-A Wing, University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at 7:00 p.m.

There will be a presentation by Dr. Robert Dalton, Art Education Professor, at the University of Victoria. Dr. Dalton's Ph.D. dissertation was focused on the theme of children's war drawings, and since then he has studied collections of drawings from Iraq, Afghanistan and other regions of the world, where the lives of children and youth have been affected by conflict. As well, he has studied art collections where peace, a much more hopeful and uplifting topic, was the theme.

Refreshments will be served. Live Arabic music will be performed. Short film clips (The Future for Gaza's Children-An Interview with Dr. Eyad al-Sarraj, Psychiatrist; Samouni Street; and Gaza: Did You Know?) will be shown.  Guests will be invited to participate in an art activity. A Gazan/Palestinian cultural display will be on hand.

CJPME gratefully acknowledges the A. Wilfrid Johns Gallery for providing this venue.
