Film "Romeo & Juliet" 2014-01-14 19:00:00
Description

ROMEO & JULIET

Director: Carlo Carlei   UK/Italy, 2013, 118 minutes

Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Paul Giamatti, Lesley Manville, Damian Lewis, Ed Westwick, Stellan Skarsgard.

Swords clash, hooves thunder and cheekbones glow in Carlo Carlei’s swashbuckling Romeo and Juliet. The film is not particularly imaginative in terms of context, but it offers proof that this material never tarnishes, that with the right sort of movie magic, even a traditional telling can be thrilling. There are reasons Shakespeare’s work still resonates. The filmmakers also had the brilliant idea of shooting much of the movie in Verona and Mantua, the play’s original settings, and the crumbling brick walls of the ancient cities cast a powerful spell. The basics are there: the bitter feud between the Montagues and Capulets; the party at which Romeo (Douglas Booth) spies Juliet (Hailee Steinfeld of True Grit) across the room and they fall in love. –Miami Herald

Lecture/Seminar EUCE Lecture Series - European Austerity: Does Inequality Matter? 2014-01-14 12:00:00
Description

The European Union Centre of Excellence, hosted by UVic's Centre for Global Studies and European Studies Program, opens it's 2014 Lecture Series with: European Austerity: Does Inequality Matter? This lecture will be delivered by Laurence Malafry, a PhD Candidate at Stocklholm University and former Economist for Environment Canada.

Abstract:
The literature on fiscal policy is progressing towards an understanding that a single fiscal multiplier is inappropriate when assessing the impact of changes in government spending and taxes. Indeed, it appears that fiscal multipliers are dependent on agent, and country characteristics, as well as, dependent on the state of the economy. One such characteristic worth exploring is the distribution of wealth within a country. In the presence of borrowing constraints, wealth poor households are less likely to be able to smooth their consumption over time and are thus more sensitive to changes in their income. In the face of benefit and wage cuts, as well as, rising taxes, European countries looking to control their primary deficits may meet varying success, depending on the mass of households living hand-to-mouth.  Does cross-country heterogeneity in wealth distributions imply significantly different fiscal multipliers?
