Film "20 Feet from Stardom" 2013-10-15 19:10:00
Description

20 FEET FROM STARDOM

Director: Morgan Neville   USA, 2013, 91 min; PG

“MOVING AND JOYOUS!” –L.A. Times

“GENEROUS, FASCINATING.” –New York Times

Why should you see a documentary about backup singers? One look at this electrifying film and you'll have the answer, that is, after you stop cheering. Lend your eyes and ears to the likes of Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer and Tata Vega, and get ready to revise your definition of what a star is. Director Morgan Neville has rightly gone into the shadows to shine a light on sheer perfection. Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bette Midler and Sting all bear witness and theorize about why that 20-foot leap to the star spot didn't happen for these unsung divas….You watch. You hear the gospel spoken in the voices of these women. And you marvel. –Rolling Stone

Exhibit Three Cornered World 2013-10-15 11:00:00
Description

Visual Arts grad Anne Heeney presents her Three Cornered World, a collection of narrative paintings and abstracts. "Drawing will always be a substantial and universal pillar," says Heeney. "Colour, however, is deeply personal. I believe the more abstract pictures demonstrate both convictions. The only way to get the point of art is to experience it raw, in galleries, in museums and in studios—regularly." Runs daily to October 19 (closed Thanksgiving Monday).

Theatre PHOENIX THEATRE: Kitt & Jane PREVIEW @8pm 2013-10-15 20:00:00
Description

KITT & JANE

An Interactive Guide to the Near Post-Apocalyptic Future
Presented as this year's Spotlight on Alumni

Created by Ingrid Hansen, Kathleen Greenfield & Rod Peter Jr.
Produced by SNAFU Dance Theatre

While making a presentation to their school, two socially awkward 14-year-olds hijack the event and launch into fantastical instructions on how to survive the impending apocalypse. Full of “ingenuity, visual magic and strange humour” – and a few rollicking musical numbers – at its heart, this play is a poignant exploration of the world today’s youth are inheriting, and what they’re prepared to do about it. A stand-alone sequel to the highly acclaimed Little Orange Man, this winner of the Critics’ Choice Spotlight Award for Best New Play is a “hilarious, invigorating piece of theatre that will follow you home.”(CVVMagazine.com)
