Film Film Week: GOLD FEVER; by J.T. Haines, Tommy Haines, and Andrew Sherburne (US/Guatemala, 2013 - 84 mins.) 2013-09-17 19:00:00
Description

Gold Fever witnesses the arrival of Goldcorp Inc. to a remote Guatemalan village.  500 years after the conquistadors, and still reeling from decades of U.S.-backed repression, Diodora, Crisanta and Gregoria are caught in the cross-hairs of another global frenzy for gold.  Together with members of their divided community, they resist the threat to their ancestral lands in the face of grave consequences.

The screening of Gold Fever is possible through the support of the Mining Justice Action Committee, the Central America Support Committee, CUPE Vancouver Island District Council, and Social Justice Studies at UVic.

The 4th Latin American and Spanish Film Week is organized by the Hispanic Film Society of Victoria (www.hispfilmvic.ca) and is sponsored by the Department of Hispanic & Italian Studies, the Division of Continuing Studies, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Office of Community Relations and the Office of the Vice-President Academic and Provost at UVic, as well as CRD Arts Development Service.

The organizing committee also acknowledges the help of Mr. Christian Sida-Valenzuela, Director of the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival.

English subtitles.  Showtimes are 7 and 9:15 p.m. at Cinecenta in the Student Union Building (Q&A session after each screening). Cost: $3.75- $7.75 (regular admission fees). For full details, visit www.cinecenta.com/ .

Lecture/Seminar DR RICHARD ZARE Chemical "Fizzics" & the Chemistry of Drink 2013-09-17 19:30:00
Description

Vifor Pharma Distinguished Speaker Series presents DR RICHARD ZARE Chemical "Fizzics" & the Chemistry of Drink

Chemistry is all around us, not just in a laboratory.

Some great examples are the drinks we consume. This lecture is about drinks; alcoholic, carbonated, or otherwise. Join us as we ponder such questions as why James Bond prefers to have his vodka Martini shaken, but not stirred.

Dr. Zare--with his unique ability to translate complex science into every-day examples--will fill his lecture with demonstrations illustrating the world of bubbles. At first one might think that bubbles cannot occupy the thoughts of a serious, award-winning scientist. Yet with his trademark passion and zany enthusiasm, Dr. Zare will elucidate some amazing technological applications for bubbles--such as the recovery of oil from tired oil wells, by making a raisin rise in a glass of champagne.

Be warned: this is the tamest of his experiments. Those attending should be prepared for some surprises as Dr. Zare explores the topic of chemical “fizzics.” Only the brave should sit in the front row.

Description

BOTANY NIGHT

Ken Marr and Richard Hebda visited Russia in 2010 and 2011 to collect selected species of circumboreal arctic/alpine plants that also occur in British Columbia. They analyzed the DNA of these species to attempt to understand the migration pathway of alpine species into BC following the last ice age and to evaluate evidence for the existence of full glacial refugia within the borders of BC.
