Lecture/Seminar Individual Differences in Risky Decision-making 2013-09-20 15:00:00
Description

Speaker: Adam Krawitz, Psyc Dept., University of Victoria

Abstract:

Kahneman and Tversky’s (1992) Cumulative Prospect Theory has been quite successful at explaining the overall trends in decision making under risk in the population, but can it explain the diversity of individual behaviors that hide behind these overall patterns? And, in a “typical” population, how diverse is risky choice anyway? I will discuss recent work that addresses these questions.

Film Film Week: EL PREMIO [The Prize]; by Paula Markovitch (Mexico/Argentina, 2011 - 99 mins.) 2013-09-20 19:00:00
Description

Under the cloud of a military dictatorship, a young mother and her daughter flee Buenos Aires for the seclusion of a cottage along the windy dunes of an Argentine beach.  The restless seven-year-old Cecilia joins a nearby school overseen by a kindly teacher.  A childhood idyll soon becomes contaminated by the general political crisis, as the teacher recruits the class for a patriotic essay contest sponsored by the army - the very people that may have already disappeared Cecilia's father.  A superbly acted and engrossingly atmospheric drama, El Premio won the Ariel, Mexico's top cinema prize, for best film in 2012.

El Premio is co-presented by the Global Film Initiative as part of the Global Lens series.  For more information, visit www.globalfilm.org.

The 4th Latin American and Spanish Film Week is organized by the Hispanic Film Society of Victoria (www.hispfilmvic.ca) and is sponsored by the Department of Hispanic & Italian Studies, the Division of Continuing Studies, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Office of Community Relations and the Office of the Vice-President Academic and Provost at UVic, as well as CRD Arts Development Service.

The organizing committee also acknowledges the help of Mr. Christian Sida-Valenzuela, Director of the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival.

English subtitles.  Showtimes are 7 and 9 p.m. at Cinecenta in the Student Union Building. Cost: $3.75- $7.75 (regular admission fees). For full details, visit www.cinecenta.com/ .
