From the studios of 23 University of Victoria art education instructors in the Faculty of Education comes a rich and diverse exhibition of images and objects in traditional and new media. These works reflect studio lives that serve as foundation for the collaboration and exchange of ideas between these artist/educators in their daily work with students engaged in creative problem solving, studio-based visual research and art exhibitions of their own. The classroom and the studio are interconnected sites of research for this creative community where teaching informs studio practice and studio informs teaching practice. This exhibition invites visitors to experience those dynamic interactions.
The gallery is open Wednesday - Saturday, 10 am - 4 pm.

Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, our increasingly urban world has seen significant improvements in indicators of health and life expectancy. However there are marked geo-spatial, socio-economic and socio-cultural differences in rates of communicable and non-communicable diseases and premature mortality. In all countries, rich and poor, there is an unequal distribution of health both within countries (the urban-rural divide) and within cities (the social gradient).
Urban management is a pressing health issue for countries and cities at all stages of economic development - following the projected trajectory of urban growth, city populations in all countries will age, the triple threat of communicable and non-communicable diseases, and accidents, injuries, road accidents, violence and crime will grow, there will be more urban sprawl and greater numbers of people living in poverty, slums and squatter settlements.
This presentation will draw on the work of the Global Research Network on Urban Health Equity - GRNUHE – established by the Rockefeller Foundation to bring to the forefront the evidence and argument for urgent action in key societal and environmental factors including governance, urban design, social infrastructure and climate change – done in such a way as to improve the health premium from urbanization and ensure its fair distribution.

Distinguished Lecture in Islam
Representations of Muslim Women: Image and Reality
Zayn R. Kassam, Department of Religious Studies, Pomona College, Claremont, CA
Muslim women are frequently depicted by Western media in images and stories that cast Islamic societies, and Muslim men in particular, in a negative light. Such gendered representations have been used to justify interventions against Muslim societies while also contributing to Islamophobic policies at home. In contrast, we might ask, What are the realities some Muslim women face, and what are they doing to address them?
Zayn Kassam is an historian of Islam and an international lecturer on gender relations in Muslim societies. She is the author and editor of numerous articles and books including Women and Islam (Praeger, 2010) and the forthcoming For What Sin Was She Slain? A Muslim Feminist Theology. Dr. Kassam holds a PhD in the history of religions from McGill University.

Director: Léos Carax
France, 2012, 115 min; French with subtitles
“ELECTRIFYING!” –Washington Post
“EXHILARATING!” –Time
“MESMERIZING!” –Slate
One of the grand cinematic eruptions of the year. Nothing makes ''sense'' in this crazy-beautiful reverie about movies, love, the love of movies, and the inevitability of human melancholy by the perpetually mysterious French filmmaker Léos Carax (The Lovers on the Bridge). The rubbery, indispensable Denis Lavant (Beau Travail) plays Monsieur Oscar, a man whose job — or is it a mission? — is to transform himself over and over in the course of a day: beggar lady, acrobat, thug, and more. Driven around in a long white limo (by gorgeous seventysomething Edith Scob), this professional shape-shifter becomes a kind of excavator of souls. –Entertainment Weekly

Frequently misunderstood but essential to our 21st century world, Islam is an ancient and proud culture as diverse as it is fascinating. Now, Islamic studies will be in the spotlight when the Middle East and Islamic Consortium of British Columbia holds their fifth annual conference at the University of Victoria. A collaboration between faculty and students of UVic, SFU and UBC, MEICON kicks off with a keynote presentation of “Representations of Muslim Women: Image and Reality” on March 21.

Sharon Friel is Professor of Health Equity at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Public Health, The Australian National University.
Between 2005 and 2008 she was the Head of the Scientific Secretariat (UCL) for the World Health Organization’s Global Commission on Social Determinants of Health. The Commission's final report noted that, "Social injustice is killing people on a grand scale." One of its three overarching recommendations was that we need to "tackle the inequitable distribution of power, money, and resources." This will be the main focus of Professor Friel's session.

Lansdowne Lecture presented by the Department of French
Lecturer: Dr. Julie Auger, Department of French and Italian, Indiana University
L'pére à Marie i croét toute 'Mary's father believes everything'. This sentence could be uttered by a Québécois speaker or a speaker of Picard. While this highlights how similar the two linguistic varieties are, I would like to argue that the two speakers hold very different views of such sentences and that their views reflect the social reality of their respective communities. Specifically, I will argue that such differences result in recognizing Picard as a distinct language with its own norm but considering Québec French as a variety of French.
This presentation will compare the linguistic varieties used in the two locations and contrast the approaches adopted by Québec and Picardie in dealing with varieties that differ from Standard French.
