Lecture/Seminar Cafe Scientifique- "Clarifying Confusion about Concussions" by Dr. Brian Christie 2013-09-24 18:30:00
Description

Cafe Scientifique is an informal seminar series hosted by the Centre for Biomedical Research that provides insight into health-related issues and general science topics of popular interest to the general public. These seminars are opportunities for the public to meet local researchers and discuss some of the most interesting and sometimes contentious research currently underway in Canada. The health related topics are co-funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR).

Sometimes science at a university happens in a way that is isolated from the general public. In a Cafe, we pull science away from its usual habitats of the classroom and the laboratory, and into, well,... a cafe or bar!
A Cafe Scientifique is more informal and accessible than a public lecture. It is for people who are genuinely interested in science, but who don''t have the opportunity to discuss their views with scientists.

No previous scientific knowledge is required to participate. All you need is and a willingness to listen to others, to discuss, ask questions and express opinions.

Lecture/Seminar Conflict and Normative Influence in a World of Multiple Groups, Multiple Norms, and Multiple Identities 2013-09-24 13:30:00
Description

Speaker: Dr. Winnifred Louis, University of Queensland, Australia

Abstract:

Conflicts between groups, between norms, and between identities are played out in the arena of collective action and social change but also inside the self.  Individuals confront a self-regulation challenge individually and collectively on two levels.  First, the complexity of the social world (grappling with contradictory rules for social behaviour, or norms, within and across groups) is taxing both to attend to and to address motivationally. Second, the choice of whether or not to conform is not straightforward: while mechanistic accounts of normative influence highlight the virtue of conforming to ingroup norms and violating outgroup norms, in fact the choices can be influenced by strategic considerations, superordinate identities, as well as short vs long-term perspectives.  I speak to these theoretical issues with data from studies primarily focusing on activism and on forms of collective action  that are more or less ‘pro-social’ vs ‘harmful’ (e.g., prejudice, political violence, and sports fan abusiveness vs egalitarianism, conventional forms of collective action, etc.).

Film "Pacific Rim" 2013-09-24 19:00:00
Description

Director: Guillermo del Toro   USA, 2013, 132 min; PG

Cast: Charlie Hunnan, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba

“GUILLERMO DEL TORO IS MORE THAN A FILMMAKER, HE’S A FANTASY VISIONARY!” –LA Times

Guillermo del Toro, the director of Pan’s Labyrinth, Cronos and the Hellboy films, has returned with a picture about giant robots doing battle with sea monsters from another dimension. Pacific Rim owes a debt to the weird tales of H.P. Lovecraft, the monster movies of Toho studios, the mecha-anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ray Harryhausen, and even Ted Hughes’s The Iron Giant are all tangled in its DNA. –The Telegraph
