Lecture/Seminar Can the 'Indian in the child' ever speak? 2013-03-27 12:00:00
Description

In 2009 Canada instituted the Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Indian Residential Schools (TRC) as an independent body with the mandate to acknowledge “residential school experiences, impacts and consequences;” provide those affected with a “holistic and culturally appropriate” opportunity to share their stories and/or experiences; and facilitate “reconciliation among former students, their families, their communities and all Canadians.” The TRC is a key component of the 2007 Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement between the Canadian government and survivors of residential schools. As a result of the TRC, stories of survivors and of residential schools have proliferated in Canadian media providing us with images and narratives about this dark episode in Canadian history.

Film "How to Survive A PLAGUE" 2013-03-27 19:00:00
Description

ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE! BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE!

HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE

Director: David France   USA, 2012, 120 minutes

“ONE OF THE BEST DOCUMENTARIES, AND BEST FILMS, OF THE YEAR!” –The Playlist

The heroes of "Plague" stare death in the face. They send crowds into battle. Some don't survive; others, faced with crushing odds, persevere and emerge transformed. When it's over, this documentary lingers as a testament to extraordinary human bravery. It stands as one of the most heartbreaking and suspenseful sagas of the year. “Plague" tracks the history of AIDS activism in response to ineffective treatment and governmental foot-dragging - with piles of archival footage from the movement's beginnings through its growth and metamorphosis as the epidemic ballooned…Let the heroes conclude their sagas with mystery, and courage, and tears. –San Francisco Chronicle
