Lecture/Seminar Cafe Scientifique on Childhood Obesity 2013-04-30 19:00:00
Description

Weighing in on Childhood Obesity: What factors are related to healthy development?

Over the last 25 year, obesity rates among children in Canada have nearly tripled. Childhood obesity has numerous negative effects on later health such as heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer. Obesity has been linked to a number of different factors, ranging from lack of physical activity to deficits in self-regulation. The goal of our workshop is to discuss research on the causes of obesity as the identification of causes of childhood obesity is key for successful intervention and prevention. Our panel includes expert researchers on child development, physical activity, and obesity. Please bring your ideas and questions and join us for a conversation about childhood obesity and how to encourage healthy development.

Film "Quartet" 2013-04-30 19:00:00
Description

QUARTET

Director: Dustin Hoffmann, UK, 2012, 99 min; PG

“A SUBTLE, SURE-FOOTED DELIGHT.” –Washington Post

Cecily, Reggie and Wilfred (Pauline Collins, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly) are in a home for retired opera singers. Every year, there is a concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday and they take part. Jean (Maggie Smith), who used to be married to Reggie, arrives at the home and disrupts their equilibrium. She still acts like a diva, but she refuses to sing. Still, the show must go on!

“This is a lovely film directed with delicacy and taste, profoundly alive to the rhythms of its characters, which gives its superlative British cast of stage and screen legends the time and space they deserve.” –Salon.com
