Lansdowne Lecture
Dr. Stephen Knight, University of Wales, Cardiff
Everybody has heard of Robin Hood, and headline-writers use his name to signify any kind of innovative financial redistribution. This is not only an Anglophone phenomenon: the English outlaw myth has travelled very far from Sherwood Forest, to become the international archetype of resistance to oppressive authority, the emblem of ‘natural law’. Professor Knight will discuss ways in which the myth of Robin Hood has developed and spread internationally, and how constantly changing social concerns about authority are revealed in the manifold variations over time of the stories about Robin, his always ‘merry’ men, and the multiform figure of Marian.
Dr. Stephen Knight is distinguished Research Professor in the Department of English, University of Wales. He has written extensively about Medieval literature, particularly Robin Hood and Arthurian legend, and has also published studies of crime fiction. His many books include, Arthurian Literature and Society (1983), Robin Hood: A complete study of the English Outlaw (1994), Robin Hood: A mythic Biography (2003), and Merlin: Knowledge and Power through the Ages (2009).

The second in a series of exhibitions and publications exploring the relationships, personalities and projects contributing to the development of a regional modernist aesthetic in the post-war Victoria urban landscape, this exhibition develops themes of the earlier exhibition Town and Gown: Centennial Square and the the Gordon Head Campus: Seminal Projects (1962–1972) March 10–May 2, 2011.
During this period a small number of legacy architectural firms changed Victoria's built environment with forward-looking planning and bold new architectural forms. Drawing on plans, drawings, photographs and architectural models from the period, this exhibit explores a number of planning initiatives, design projects and building programs that defined this important phase in the development of the Capital Region.
Photo is Bay Parkade Entry 1960 by Hubert Norbury.
The Legacy Art Gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Originally trained in modern Swiss typography and graphic design, Zurich-born Reto Caduff is working as a director for film and television. He produced and directed documentaries on lowrider fanatics, Native Americans, militia soldiers, UFO believers, and gun-carrying school kids.
“My work might be in different genres and media but it all boils down to my desire to touch people by telling them stories in a visually enthralling way,” Caduff explains. He is co-director of the award-winning documentary A Crude Awakening – The Oil Crash which was shown at over 30 international festivals and aired on the Sundance Channel. His documentary on the highly influential mid-century modern design master Herbert Matter (The Visual Language of Herbert Matter) will be screened at the Victoria Film Festival on 7 February 2012. Reto Caduff is also the curator of CinemaSwiss. This exhibition of Swiss film posters coincides with the film festival and is sponsored by the Swiss Consulate General in Vancouver.
