Exhibit Ellen Neel: The First Woman Totem Pole Carver 2017-03-11 10:00
Description

This exhibition celebrates the career of Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka'wakw) carver Ellen Neel (1916-1966), the first woman carver of monumental totem poles. Further, it acknowledges Neel's influential role as a professional artist and her contribution towards the recognition of Northwest Coast Indian art as a contemporary art form.

"Our art continues to live, for not only is it part and parcel of us, but can be a powerful factor in combining the best part of Indian culture with the fabric of a truly Canadian art form."

Exhibit The Mystery of Grafton Tyler Brown: Race, Art, and Landscape in 19th Century British Columbia 2017-03-11 10:00
Description

We know Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was one of the first professional landscape artists to work in the Pacific Northwest. His few regional paintings that survive offer vivid windows into the world of 1880s Victoria and British Columbia. Yet, how did this African American artist succeed at a time when racial prejudice prevented most Blacks from entering any skilled profession? Guest curated by Dr. John Lutz (History, UVic) with Emerald Johnstone Bedell and Caroline Riedel. Created in partnership with UVIC Legacy Art Galleries and UVIC History Department. With conservation support from the Royal BC Museum. Image credit: Portrait of Artist Grafton Tyler Brown, Image A-08775 courtesy of the Royal BC Museum and Archives

Theatre PHOENIX: The Inspector 2017-03-11 20:00:00
Description

The Inspector

March 9 –18, 2017

By Nikolay Gogol
Adapted & Directed by Linda Hardy

Word arrives in a little government town that an inspector is coming – incognito! Panic seizes the town’s officials: Will their little improprieties be exposed? Meanwhile, a lowly civil servant visiting from out of province is mistaken for the inspector. The officials outdo themselves to please him with gifts and he, in turn, grows bolder. This satirical farce spins out of control, as hypocrisy, corruption, and human greed escalate. Gogol’s comedy of errors, written in19th-century Russia, is no less relevant in our modern political landscape.

Appropriate for ages 13+

Film SINGIN' IN THE RAIN 2017-03-11 12:45:00
Description

SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN

(Gene Kelly & Stanley Donen, USA, 1952, 103 min; rated G)

This exuberant satire of Hollywood in the late 20s, at the time of the transition from silents to talkies, is probably the most enjoyable of all American movie musicals. The teamwork of the stars, Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds, is joyful and the material is first-rate. –Pauline Kael

Film LION 2017-03-11 15:00:00
Description

LION

Director: Garth Davis; Australia, 2016, 119 min; rated G

NOMINATED FOR 6 ACADEMY AWARDS including BEST PICTURE!

A moving performance from Dev Patel is the resilient soul of this enthralling feature debut from Garth Davis that tells the true story of Saroo Brierley and his tenacious quest to find the family from whom he was separated 25 years earlier. Tempering its sentimentality with authentic feeling, the film is a stirring contemplation of roots, identity and home. Sunny Pawar, who plays Saroo as a 5-year-old in the opening chapter, and Nicole Kidman, as Saroo's adoptive mother, give beautiful performances. –The Hollywood Reporter

“Lion is one from the heart.”Rolling Stone

“A beautifully told, uplifting story of courage and determination.” –Chicago Sun-Times
