Exhibit The Mystery of Grafton Tyler Brown: Race, Art, and Landscape in 19th Century British Columbia 2017-03-22 10:00
Description

We know Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was one of the first professional landscape artists to work in the Pacific Northwest. His few regional paintings that survive offer vivid windows into the world of 1880s Victoria and British Columbia. Yet, how did this African American artist succeed at a time when racial prejudice prevented most Blacks from entering any skilled profession? Guest curated by Dr. John Lutz (History, UVic) with Emerald Johnstone Bedell and Caroline Riedel. Created in partnership with UVIC Legacy Art Galleries and UVIC History Department. With conservation support from the Royal BC Museum.

ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE: BEST FOREIGN FILM!

After scoring an Oscar for A Separation, Asghar Farhadi returns to Tehran for this quietly gripping drama about a couple, amateur actors appearing in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, whose relationship starts to splinter in the aftermath of an assault. But if and when he does, what will he do then? And at what cost? –Vancouver International Film Festival

Lecture/Seminar Visiting Artist Lecture: Jinny Yu 2017-03-22 19:30:00
Description

Orion Visitor in Fine Arts

Jinny Yu’s work grows out of an inquiry into the medium of painting, as a means of trying to understand the world around us. Denaturalizing the medium and questioning its authority, her recent project Don’t They Ever Stop Migrat- ing? was exhibited at the 56th Venice Biennale. It subsequently toured at The Rooms and was acquired by the Agnes Etherington Art Centre. Her previous work has been shown widely, including exhibitions in Canada, Germany, Ja- pan, Italy, Portugal, South Korea, UK and USA. She was an artist in residence at the ISCP in New York, Nanji Art Studios in Seoul, and at the Banff Centre for the Arts.

Yu, an Associate Professor of Painting at the University of Ottawa, was award- ed the Mid-Career Artist Award by Ottawa Arts Council in 2013; Laura Ciruls Painting Award from Ontario Arts Foundation in 2012; and was a nalist for the Pulse Prize New York Prize 2011 and 2014.
