Exhibit Ellen Neel: The First Woman Totem Pole Carver 2017-03-03 10:00
Description

This exhibition celebrates the career of Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka'wakw) carver Ellen Neel (1916-1966), the first woman carver of monumental totem poles. Further, it acknowledges Neel's influential role as a professional artist and her contribution towards the recognition of Northwest Coast Indian art as a contemporary art form.

"Our art continues to live, for not only is it part and parcel of us, but can be a powerful factor in combining the best part of Indian culture with the fabric of a truly Canadian art form."

Ellen Neel

Exhibit The Mystery of Grafton Tyler Brown: Race, Art, and Landscape in 19th Century British Columbia 2017-03-03 10:00
Description

We know Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was one of the first professional landscape artists to work in the Pacific Northwest. His few regional paintings that survive offer vivid windows into the world of 1880s Victoria and British Columbia. Yet, how did this African American artist succeed at a time when racial prejudice prevented most Blacks from entering any skilled profession? Guest curated by Dr. John Lutz (History, UVic) with Emerald Johnstone Bedell and Caroline Riedel. Created in partnership with UVIC Legacy Art Galleries and UVIC History Department. With conservation support from the Royal BC Museum.

Film JACKIE 2017-03-03 15:00:00
Description

JACKIE

Director: Pablo Larrain; Chile/USA, 2016, 100 min; 14A

Cast: Natalie Portman, Billy Crudup, Peter Sarsgaard, Greta Gerwig, John Hurt.

Extraordinary in its piercing intimacy and lacerating in its sorrow, Chilean director Pablo Larrain's English-language debut is a raw portrait of iconic first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, reeling in the wake of tragedy while at the same time summoning the fortitude needed to make her husband's death meaningful and to ensure her own survival as something more than a footnote. The movie is powered by an astonishing performance from a never-better Natalie Portman in the title role. –The Hollywood Reporter

“The never-better Portman simply shines, giving a performance of mesmeric complexity and commitment.”The Telegraph
