Description

DANCER

Director Steven Cantor; UK/Ukraine, 2016, 85 minutes; English & subtitles; PG

26-year old Ukraine-born ballet superstar Sergei Polunin loves to dance but doesn’t always know why. That internal conflict is at the heart of this sensitive, luxuriantly filmed documentary about the princely, magnetic Polunin, A jubilant, talented child, Polunin’s obvious talent earned him a place at London’s Royal Ballet School. In record time he was named a principal at the Royal Ballet at 19, making him the youngest ever. But separated from his family, Polunin veered toward burnout, which led to behavior that earned him a reputation as ballet’s bad boy.

From early home videos to the fiercely emotional, tattooed star of the “Take Me to Church” video that became a viral sensation, “Dancer” becomes a gentle inquiry into how a gifted performer disrupts his life in order to test his passion. –L.A. Times

“Captures those moments where youth and artistry and astonishing talent merge into reckless, glorious dance, emblazoned on a vast screen. –Seattle Times

Lecture/Seminar Ideafest Presents: Whither Plastic? Nurdles & plastics on Victoria beaches 2017-03-06 14:00:00
Description

Pollution from plastics is a growing problem in marine environments worldwide. Plastics don't readily break down; they're known to soak up contaminants, and marine animals sometimes mistake them as food, causing plastics to move up the food chain. This session will examine nurdles (kernels or pellets used to make plastics) and plastic debris fouling the beaches of Victoria, and will wrestle with the question: How can we wean ourselves from plastics?

Exhibit The Mystery of Grafton Tyler Brown: Race, Art, and Landscape in 19th Century British Columbia 2017-03-06 10:00
Description

We know Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was one of the first professional landscape artists to work in the Pacific Northwest. His few regional paintings that survive offer vivid windows into the world of 1880s Victoria and British Columbia. Yet, how did this African American artist succeed at a time when racial prejudice prevented most Blacks from entering any skilled profession? Guest curated by Dr. John Lutz (History, UVic) with Emerald Johnstone Bedell and Caroline Riedel. Created in partnership with UVIC Legacy Art Galleries and UVIC History Department. With conservation support from the Royal BC Museum.
