Film LA LA LAND 2017-04-02 15:00:00
Description

LA LA LAND

Director: Damien Chazelle; USA, 2016, 128 min; PG

NOMINATED FOR 14 ACADEMY AWARDS including BEST PICTURE, ACTRESS, ACTOR, DIRECTOR, SCREENPLAY, SONG, SCORE, CINEMATOGRAPHY!

Damien Chazelle's daring and beautiful follow-up to ‘Whiplash’ is an original L.A.-set musical starring Ryan Gosling and a glorious Emma Stone as a couple of Hollywood strivers — he a musician, she an actress — who fall in love. The director's feel for a classic genre is instinctive; he knows how to stage and frame dance and lyrical movement, to transition from conventional to singing scenes, to turn naturalistic settings into fantasy backdrops. Musical lovers, and many others, will be swept away. –The Hollywood Reporter

“IT’S JUST GORGEOUS.” –NPR

“ONE OF THE YEAR’S BEST FILMS.” –Toronto Star

Exhibit The Mystery of Grafton Tyler Brown: Race, Art, and Landscape in 19th Century British Columbia 2017-04-02 10:00
Description

We know Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was one of the first professional landscape artists to work in the Pacific Northwest. His few regional paintings that survive offer vivid windows into the world of 1880s Victoria and British Columbia. Yet, how did this African American artist succeed at a time when racial prejudice prevented most Blacks from entering any skilled profession? Guest curated by Dr. John Lutz (History, UVic) with Emerald Johnstone Bedell and Caroline Riedel. Created in partnership with UVIC Legacy Art Galleries and UVIC History Department. With conservation support from the Royal BC Museum.
