Film NERUDA 2017-04-23 15:00:00
Description

NERUDA

Director: Pablo Larraín

Chile/Argentina/Spain, 2016, 108 min; Spanish with subtitles; PG

Pablo Larraín (No, The Club, Jackie) weaves an engrossing meta-fictional fable around the 1948 manhunt for celebrated poet and politician Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco), who goes underground when Chile outlaws communism and is pursued by an ambitious police inspector (Gael García Bernal) hoping to make a name for himself by capturing the famous fugitive. –Toronto International Film Festival

"A work of such cleverness and beauty, alongside such power, that it’s hard to know how to parcel out praise: script, cinematography, art direction and performances all vie for kudos and awards."Variety

“A dream of Chile, of what it was and might have been, brought to the screen by a master dreamer.”Boston Globe

“Is ‘Neruda’ a cinematic play, a poem, a biopic? In this near-perfect homage to a literary giant, it's all open to interpretation.”The Globe and Mail

Exhibit The Mystery of Grafton Tyler Brown: Race, Art, and Landscape in 19th Century British Columbia 2017-04-23 10:00
Description

We know Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was one of the first professional landscape artists to work in the Pacific Northwest. His few regional paintings that survive offer vivid windows into the world of 1880s Victoria and British Columbia. Yet, how did this African American artist succeed at a time when racial prejudice prevented most Blacks from entering any skilled profession? Guest curated by Dr. John Lutz (History, UVic) with Emerald Johnstone Bedell and Caroline Riedel. Created in partnership with UVIC Legacy Art Galleries and UVIC History Department. With conservation support from the Royal BC Museum.
