Film CALL OF THE FOREST with Diana Beresord-Kroeger in person! 2017-04-25 19:00:00
Description

Special Event!  Diana Beresord-Kroeger will be here for a panel discussion after the 7pm show on Apr. 25 only!    Regular Cinecenta prices.

CALL OF THE FOREST: The Forgotten Wisdom of Trees

Director: Jeffrey McKay; Canada, 2016, 82 min.

“A PASSIONATE ECO-DOCUMENTARY….WILL MAKE YOU SEE TREES WITH NEW EYES.” –Winnipeg Free Press

You can almost smell the forest in this beautiful new advocacy documentary featuring the Irish/Canadian author, conservationist, and botanist Diana Beresford-Kroeger.  –Pacific Cinematheque

The film follows Diana Beresford-Kroeger as she investigates our profound biological and spiritual connection to the woodlands and explores the most beautiful forests in the Northern Hemisphere.

From the sacred sugi and cedar forests of Japan to the great boreal forest of Canada, Beresford-Kroeger relates the amazing history and legacy of these ancient forests while also explaining the science of trees and the irreplaceable roles they play in protecting and feeding the planet.

This beautifully photographed film also profiles the Engelmann Spruce and the Great Western Red Cedar from the remaining ancient coastal rainforest of Vancouver Island.

We meet some of the world’s foremost experts in reforestation and are introduced to the activism of the Anishinaabe people of Pimachiowin Aki in Manitoba and Ontario. While calling for massive, global action, the film at heart is a story of triumph, proposing that each of us can combat climate change by planting trees in our own yards and neighbourhoods.

Special Event!  Diana Beresord-Kroeger will be here for a panel discussion after the 7pm show on Apr. 25 only!    Regular Cinecenta prices.

Exhibit The Mystery of Grafton Tyler Brown: Race, Art, and Landscape in 19th Century British Columbia 2017-04-25 10:00
Description

We know Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was one of the first professional landscape artists to work in the Pacific Northwest. His few regional paintings that survive offer vivid windows into the world of 1880s Victoria and British Columbia. Yet, how did this African American artist succeed at a time when racial prejudice prevented most Blacks from entering any skilled profession? Guest curated by Dr. John Lutz (History, UVic) with Emerald Johnstone Bedell and Caroline Riedel. Created in partnership with UVIC Legacy Art Galleries and UVIC History Department. With conservation support from the Royal BC Museum.
