SILENCE

Director: Martin Scorsese  USA, 2016, 161 min; English & Japanese with subtitles; 14A

Cast: Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Yōsuke Kubozuka, Liam Neeson

Set in the seventeenth century, two Portuguese priests, Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Garrupe (Adam Driver), have heard rumors that their teacher and confessor, Father Ferreira (Liam Neeson), a missionary in Japan, has betrayed his Christian faith, and they travel to search for him. En route, they learn of the bloody persecution that Christians face in Japan, and when they’re smuggled into the country they, too, face the authorities’ wrath. Rodrigues is the protagonist of this picaresque epic of oppression and martyrdom. As he closes in on Ferreira the movie morphs into a spectacularly dramatic and bitterly ironic theatre of cruelty that both exalts and questions central Christian myths. It plays like Martin Scorsese’s own searing confession. –The New Yorker

Lecture/Seminar Building and Sustaining Interdisciplinary Studies on Campus 2017-04-06 15:30:00
Description

Presented by the Office of Interdisciplinary Academic Programs

Distinguished Women Scholar Dr. Julie Thompson Klein is Professor of Humanities Emerita in the English Department and Faculty Fellow for Interdisciplinary Development at Wayne State University.

Interdisciplinarity has been embraced as central to complex societies and the modern university, yet its implementation remains illusive. Many structural constraints exist, competing with demands for new cross-disciplinary approaches. Dr. Julie Klein, Distinguished Women Scholar for 2016 will explore this complex terrain and engage us in a critical conversation about how internationalization, intersectionality and socio-political forces offer new trajectories for imagining disciplinary knowledges.

Dr. Klein is author of Creating Interdisciplinary Campus Cultures and numerous other publications that have been instrumental in defining the field of interdisciplinary teaching and learning across North America and around the globe.

Sponsored by the Provost’s Distinguished Women Scholars Committee.

Conference Social Dimensions of Health Conference 2017-04-06 All Day
Description

We’re inviting you to participate in UVIC’s second, semi-annual Social Dimensions of Health (SDH) Student Conference, scheduled for April 6, 2017

The theme for the 2017 conference is:
Connecting Health Across Topics (Let's CHAT)

In 2015, University of Victoria’s Social Dimensions of Health program hosted its first student conference with over 40 members in attendance. Building on these students’ momentum, in 2017, the current SDH students hope to create a tradition of student interdisciplinary healthy inquiry with a second semi-annual conference to be held on April 6, 2017.

The SDH Student Conference is an important opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as community partners and members, to gather together, showcase their research and/or community engagement and discuss the intersections of health within all disciplines. We will be inviting students and community members from across BC to join us in what we hope will be a rich day of mutual learning and idea sharing. It is our sense that this student conference has immense potential for growth and to become an important voice for the Western Canadian health-concerned student community.

Exhibit The Mystery of Grafton Tyler Brown: Race, Art, and Landscape in 19th Century British Columbia 2017-04-06 10:00
Description

We know Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was one of the first professional landscape artists to work in the Pacific Northwest. His few regional paintings that survive offer vivid windows into the world of 1880s Victoria and British Columbia. Yet, how did this African American artist succeed at a time when racial prejudice prevented most Blacks from entering any skilled profession? Guest curated by Dr. John Lutz (History, UVic) with Emerald Johnstone Bedell and Caroline Riedel. Created in partnership with UVIC Legacy Art Galleries and UVIC History Department. With conservation support from the Royal BC Museum.
