The First Media War: The Protestant Reformation and the Power of Print

On May 2 Mitch Lewis-Hammond will take us back to 1517 and the birth of the Protestant Reformation, and describe how both sides used a revolutionary new communications medium – print – to wage war in the battle for souls. Why do we commemorate? What does it mean to mark historical anniversaries? Come to Hermann’s Jazz Club for an enjoyable evening of investigation and discussion in a classy, convivial atmosphere. Doors open at 5pm; talks begin at 6:30.

Exhibit The Mystery of Grafton Tyler Brown: Race, Art, and Landscape in 19th Century British Columbia 2017-05-02 10:00
Description

We know Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was one of the first professional landscape artists to work in the Pacific Northwest. His few regional paintings that survive offer vivid windows into the world of 1880s Victoria and British Columbia. Yet, how did this African American artist succeed at a time when racial prejudice prevented most Blacks from entering any skilled profession? Guest curated by Dr. John Lutz (History, UVic) with Emerald Johnstone Bedell and Caroline Riedel. Created in partnership with UVIC Legacy Art Galleries and UVIC History Department. With conservation support from the Royal BC Museum.

Film WEIRDOS 2017-05-02 19:00:00
Description

WEIRDOS

Director: Bruce McDonald; Canada, 2016, 85 min; PG

Cast: Dylan Authors, Julia Sarah Stone and Molly Parker.

A double Canadian Screen Awards winner — Best Supporting Actress for Molly Parker and Best Original Screenplay for Daniel MacIvor — Weirdos is one of Bruce McDonald’s sweetest films.

Filmed in lustrous B & W, it’s a coming-of-age road movie set in 1976. Questing teenager Kit (Dylan Authors) and his BFF Alice (Julia Sarah Stone) leave their tiny Nova Scotia town for adventure in the “big” city of Sydney. What could go wrong for a couple of kids who listen to Canrock — the soundtrack is like a ’70s sampler pack — and who just wanna have fun?

Plenty, since one of them is unsure of his sexual identity, the other doubts her relationship status and both are wondering how Kit’s divorced mom (Molly Parker) will welcome their unheralded arrival.

“Anything’s possible” observes a hovering magic-realist figure, an Andy Warhol lookalike amusingly played by Rhys Bevan-John. He calls himself Kit’s “spirit animal” and offers a defining sentiment: “We’re all weirdos. That’s what makes us beautiful.” –Toronto Star

“A lovely, low-key memory piece, vibrant with the awkward grace of adolescence.”The Hollywood Reporter

“What's not to love about Canuck hipster Bruce McDonald's return to a genre of which he's a master -- the indie road movie with a distinctly Canadian flavour and endearingly peculiar characters?”Victoria Times-Colonist

“A coming-of-age story for a country. McDonald waves a freak flag. It has a leaf.” -–The Globe and Mail
