Origin Stories

First Nations Prints and Carvings

Guest curated by Jackson McDermott (Dene/Cree) with Gillian Booth and Katie Hughes.

As Canada celebrates 150 years since Confederation, the Legacy Art Galleries respectfully acknowledges a much longer history by presenting First Nations narratives that move beyond limited settler versions of history. Through prints and carvings chosen by guest curator, Jackson McDermott (Dene/Cree) from the Fort Nelson First Nation, the exhibition explores centuries-old stories that continue to live in the people, communities, nations and lands of this place.

Lecture/Seminar Online Office Hours 2017-05-25 10:00:00
Description

Are your students not asking enough questions in class? Are there long lines, or no lines, outside your office every week? If so, consider moving some of your office hours online! Engaging students via IRC, an anonymous text-based interface, enhances the ability of busy, working students, EAL students, shy students or students with disabilities to access professor feedback at their own pace. This technique is popular with students and has led to dramatic increases in retention and understanding of material covered.  The workshop will introduce participants to IRC and its course applications, and will also briefly review the use of Skype for group project feedback.

Film THE WEDDING PLAN 2017-05-25 19:00:00
Description

THE WEDDING PLAN

Director: Rama Burshtein; Israel, 2016, 110 min, Hebrew with subtitles

At 32, Michal (Noa Kooler) is finally looking forward to the comfort and security of marriage, when she is blindsided by her fiancé’s decision to call off the wedding with only a month’s notice. Unwilling to return to lonely single life, Michal decides to put her trust in fate and continue with her wedding plans, believing Mr. Right will appear by her chosen date.

She enlists the help of two different matchmakers, goes on a series of disastrous blind dates and finds an unexpected connection with a charming but utterly unsuitable pop star – all while dismissing pleas by concerned friends and family members that she reconsider her risky plan. As the day of the ceremony grows closer and no suitor appears, Michal puts everything on the line to find happiness.
