Alumni "A Typology of Direct Action at Sea" with Teale Phelps Bondaroff 2017-05-31 10:30:00

WHEN: May 31st, 2017
TIME: 10:30am - noon
WHERE: Sedgewick C168

Non-governmental organizations, community groups, and other civil society non-state actors have traditionally been seen as relying on lobbying, advocating or protesting to further marine conservation aims. However an increasing number of actors have begun to diversify their repertoires to include direct action. Activists are known to engage in ecosystem restoration, however increasingly we see them behaving like states; engaging in surveillance, monitoring and even the direct enforcement of maritime (conversation) laws and regulations. These variations of direct action eschew traditional moral framing in favour of legal framing, presenting environmentally harmful activity as criminal activity. This talk explores the emerging diversity of direct action strategies employed by non-state actors in combating fish crime. It begins to present a typology of these strategies, establishing overlapping categories, which include deterrence, compellence and service provision.

Teale Phelps Bondaroff is an international relations scholar with a PhD in politics and international studies from the University of Cambridge. He completed BAs in political science and international relations from the University of Calgary. His academic research focuses on the strategy of non-state actors, specifically the strategic use of international law by conservation non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

April 8 to September 16, 2017

Origin Stories

First Nations Prints and Carvings

Guest curated by Jackson McDermott (Dene/Cree) with Gillian Booth and Katie Hughes.

As Canada celebrates 150 years since Confederation, the Legacy Art Galleries respectfully acknowledges a much longer history by presenting First Nations narratives that move beyond limited settler versions of history. Through prints and carvings chosen by guest curator, Jackson McDermott (Dene/Cree) from the Fort Nelson First Nation, the exhibition explores centuries-old stories that continue to live in the people, communities, nations and lands of this place.

Theatre Born Yesterday 2017-05-31 All Day

A sharp political satire as relevant today as when it debuted on Broadway in 1946, Blue Bridge Repertory presents Born Yesterday, the American classic made famous by the 1950 film version starring Judy Holliday, William Holden and Broderick Crawford. When an uncouth, remorseless junk dealer arrives in Washington DC with his showgirl mistress by his side, his mission is to buy a congressman. But when the showgirl’s ignorance and audacity threatens his business dealings, he hires a journalist to educate her. It turns out she has an incredible natural intelligence, which she uses to turn the tables on the under–the–table proceedings. Theatre alumna and playwright Janet Munsil directs this latest Blue Bridge production, which features an alumni-heavy cast and crew, with cast members including Michael Armstrong (Writing MFA and sessional instructor), Jonathan Mason, Nick Guerreiro, Chase Hiebert, Caitlin Holm, Tim Machin, Danielle Janess and former Theatre student Jacob Richmond, plus lighting by professor emeritus Giles Hogya, set by Barb Clerihue, costumes by Graham McMonagle, and sound by Carolyn Moon.

Lecture/Seminar Strong Sentences and Self Editing 2017-05-31 14:00:00

Choose Your Own Self-Editing Adventure: Common Errors and How to Avoid Them!

Less is more. This class will teach you how to write more concisely and avoid redundancy and wordiness, so that you can finish within your word limit and write with impact and purpose. We will also explore the concepts of sentence “weight,” plain language principles, and good sentence construction. Learn the differences between the four sentence types, and build a varied piece of writing that shows connections between ideas in the best way possible.

In this workshop, you’ll also consider common errors made by both native and non-native English speakers, and begin to develop a self-editing checklist that you can use to improve your own writing. Bring a piece of your unpolished writing with you and get feedback on items to add to your list.
