| Exhibit | The Emergence of Architectural Modernism II: UVic and the Regional Aesthetic in the Late 1950s and 60s | 2012-01-29 | 10:00:00 |
| Description
|
The second in a series of exhibitions and publications exploring the relationships, personalities and projects contributing to the development of a regional modernist aesthetic in the post-war Victoria urban landscape, this exhibition develops themes of the earlier exhibition Town and Gown: Centennial Square and the the Gordon Head Campus: Seminal Projects (1962–1972) March 10–May 2, 2011.
During this period a small number of legacy architectural firms changed Victoria's built environment with forward-looking planning and bold new architectural forms. Drawing on plans, drawings, photographs and architectural models from the period, this exhibit explores a number of planning initiatives, design projects and building programs that defined this important phase in the development of the Capital Region.
Photo is Bay Parkade Entry 1960 by Hubert Norbury.
The Legacy Art Gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Justification is Potential Knowledge”
Prof. Jonathan Ichikawa
Assistant Professor
U.B.C.
Abstract
I defend a novel theory of epistemic justification, which I characterize as the identification of justification with "potential knowledge," in a sense to be articulated. Because the theory elucidates justification with reference to knowledge, it is an instance of the Williamsonian "Knowledge First" program; I highlight and clarify some features of that program in generality.

| Exhibit | Images of Internment: Paintings by Henry Shimizu | 2012-01-29 | All Day |
| Description
|
In 1999, Dr. Henry Shimizu created a series of oil paintings based on his life as a teenager in the New Denver Japanese Internment Camp, BC, from 1942 to 1946. Images of Internment is an attempt to highlight the activities and lifestyle of the internees in this camp; they are the memories of a teenager and his friends.
According to Shimizu, despite isolation from mainstream Canadian Society during this time, the development of young Japanese Canadians progressed in almost the same pattern as any other Canadian teenager. One would have thought that this internment experience would have embittered this group and led to widespread despair and depression. Instead, says Shimizu, they came away from the experience more determined to be successful Canadians, contrary to the intention of those who promoted and carried out this injustice of internment and exile.
Shimizu will also present a lecture on Nov. 23 at 3:30 p.m. titled " A Journey to the Past and Present: The History of the Japanese-Canadian Internment in 1942 to 1946; Life in the New Denver Internment Camp" at the Mearns Centre adjacent to UVic Archives.

MARINE NIGHT
The Greatest Infection of the Sea
In 1994 Captain Charles Moore founded the Algalita Marine Research Foundation in Long Beach, California, an organization documenting human-caused contamination of the ocean. After a 1997 trans Pacific yacht race, he was returning from Hawaii and witnessed vast amounts of floating plastic, now dubbed the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and since then has dedicated his time and resources to understanding and remediating the ocean''''s plastic load. The topic of tonight''''s talk is also documented in his book ''''Plastic Ocean'''' and his work has been featured on Good Morning America, Late Night with David Letterman, Nightline, and the Colbert Report.

| Other | Deutscher Abend an der Uni - Angelika Arend reading from her novel Qualverwandt (in German) | 2012-01-31 | 19:30:00 |
| Description
|
A well-known active member of the Victoria German community, conductor of various choirs, Germanic Studies professor emerita, recipient of the Walter Bauer Prize, scholar and published poet, Dr. Angelika Arend will read from her most recent venture into the world of narrative fiction, her collection of short prose Qualverwandt. You can choose your friends, but not your family. Is that why they are so often at each other’s throats? Indeed as much about the grand themes of existence, life and death, as about the small, petty things?

| Lecture/Seminar | CSRS Public Lecture Series - Religious Pluralism, Religious Freedom, and Multicultural Policy: Lessons from Three Tolerant Societies | 2012-02-01 | 16:30:00 |
| Description
|
Centre for Studies in Religion and Society Public Lecture Series
Religious Pluralism, Religious Freedom, and Multicultural Policy: Lessons from Three Tolerant Societies
Paul Rasor
CSRS Visiting Research Fellow, Virginia Wesleyan College
Canada, the Netherlands and the United States have long been regarded as among the world’s most tolerant societies, sharing a deep commitment to pluralism and religious freedom. Yet as religious and cultural diversity continue to increase, all three societies have had to face hard questions about national self-understanding and the limits of tolerance. This lecture examines the divergent policy approaches to religious freedom that have emerged within these three societies.
Paul Rasor is the director of the Center for the Study of Religious Freedom and professor of interdisciplinary studies at Virginia Wesleyan College. He holds a PhD in the study of religion from Harvard and a JD from the University of Michigan. | Lecture/Seminar | Xwulmuxw Slhunlheni (Indigenous Women) and Leadership | 2012-02-01 | 12:00:00 |
| Description
|
Robina Thomas, associate professor in the School of Social Work will present this Research Conversation. Xwulmuxw Slhunlheni (Indigenous Women) have, since time immemorial, played critical leadership roles in Indigenous communities. However, with the imposition of racist/sexist colonial policies, indigenous women's roles were systematically displaced. As a result of these policies, which formalized colonial governance systems, the vital informal leadership roles the Xwulmuxw Slhunlheni play rarely get recognized. This presentation will honour (or stand up) the women in our communities who continue to embrace their important roles as givers of life and carriers of culture. Specifically, I will focus on teachings that 13 women passed on to me about the importance of keeping the Past, Present and Future connected. This is the Sacred Cycle and it is necessary to pass on these teachings for the future generations.

“Justification is Potential Knowledge”

Abstract
I defend a novel theory of epistemic justification, which I characterize as the identification of justification with "potential knowledge," in a sense to be articulated. | Exhibit | Images of Internment: Paintings by Henry Shimizu | 2012-02-01 | All Day |
|

| Exhibit | The Emergence of Architectural Modernism II: UVic and the Regional Aesthetic in the Late 1950s and 60s | 2012-02-01 | 10:00:00 |
|

| Description
|
Boxed In: Searching for the Public Good in the Retail Landscape
Lecture by Pam Shaw, Vancouver Island University
The retail landscape has changed significantly since the mid 20th century, evolving from a city centre focus through strip malls, shopping centres, shopping malls, mega-malls, big box stores, and to the newest forms of retailing – the lifestyle commercial centres and mixed use developments. One constant through this evolution has been municipal government fixation on more and ever larger developments, with the public good defined as economic good. This discussion looks the meaning of the public good in urban environments through a land use planning lens and examines if the current retail landscape is representative of the public good.

| Lecture/Seminar | Dr. Eric DeChaine: Diversification of arctic-alpine plants during the Pleistocene | 2012-02-03 | 14:30:00 |
| Description
|
Eric DeChaine’s research focuses on how fluctuations in Quaternary climate have impacted the distribution and diversity of the Arctic-alpine flora and fauna, and on how populations track suitable habitat across the shifting landscape and/or adapt to environmental changes. He and his students are using molecular methods to 1) test biogeographic hypotheses, speciation models and ecological niche models in various species of plants and animals; and 2) compare DNA from modern populations with ancient DNA preserved in permafrost middens to estimate responses to climate change.

University of Victoria Philosophy Colloquium
“Justification is Potential Knowledge”
Prof. Jonathan Ichikawa
Assistant Professor
U.B.C.
Abstract
I defend a novel theory of epistemic justification, which I characterize as the identification of justification with "potential knowledge," in a sense to be articulated. Because the theory elucidates justification with reference to knowledge, it is an instance of the Williamsonian "Knowledge First" program; I highlight and clarify some features of that program in generality.

| Exhibit | The Emergence of Architectural Modernism II: UVic and the Regional Aesthetic in the Late 1950s and 60s | 2012-02-04 | 10:00:00 |
|
The Legacy Art Gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

| Conference | Magicians, Seers and Sages: 25th Annual Medieval Workshop | 2012-02-04 | 09:00:00 |
| Description
|
Magician, shaman, seer, witch, sage, wizard, sorcerer, sibyl: many words have been used to describe the charismatic individuals believed to be able to glimpse future events and penetrate the barriers between the physical world and the spiritual realm. They are the possessors of arcane wisdom and the performers of magic, both benevolent and malignant. Such skills might generate veneration in some, fear and revulsion in others. Confrontation with established religions could lead to brutal results including the torture and burning of women alleged to be witches. The 25th annual Medieval Workshop explores the enduring fascination — both in the Medieval period and in our own time — with magicians and the magic they claimed to be able to create. The talks will take us from the beliefs and legends of the Celts, Saxons and Vikings in Northern Europe to the practice of Jewish magic in the Medieval Mediterranean.
