Lecture/Seminar How Age-Friendly is BC? 2012-04-18 19:00:00
Description

The University of Victoria's Retirees Association and the Centre on Aging—with support from the university—presents Masterminds 2012, a free lecture series running each Wednesday evening in April.

What makes a community senior-friendly? In an attempt to enhance the activity level and independence of seniors living throughout the province, a three-year research study was conducted in over 30 communities. In this presentation, Dr. Gallagher will outline many of the lessons learned and will provide guidelines for communities wishing to implement age-friendly initiatives.

Elaine Gallagher is professor emeritus in the School of Nursing and is the former director of the Centre on Aging. She was named Outstanding Alumna by Simon Fraser University in 2007 and named Researcher of the Year (2002) by the Canadian Association of Nurse Researchers for her work on falls and injury prevention among older people. Dr. Gallagher is best known for her work on Studies of Environments which Promote Safety (STEPS), the first published study on the epidemiology of seniors’ slips, trips and falls in public places. She is currently the lead Canadian researcher for an international project on age-friendly communities.

Please register by calling 250-721-6369 and plan to arrive early, as seating is limited. There is a $2.25 charge in all campus parking lots during evenings.

Lecture/Seminar "The smallest stroke revealed through behavior and in vivo imaging" 2012-04-19 12:00:00
Description

Together, the Division of Medical Sciences and the Department of Biology host Dr. David Kleinfeld on Thursday, April 19th.

David Kleinfeld's group at UCSD studies issues in Systems Neuroscience, with a focus on perception and sensorimotor control in the vibrissa system as well as on the topology and neuronal coupling of corticol vasculature.

He will speak on the latter topic, with a focus on the use of nonlinear imaging to reveal the nature of cortical blood flow. This work revealed points of robustness versus weakness, hence the relation to microinfarcts in disease, as well as points of likely neuronal control.

Film Meryl Streep is THE IRON LADY 2012-04-20 15:00:00
Description

Director: Phyllida Lloyd   UK, 2011, 106 minutes; PG

Cast: Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Richard E. Grant
ACADEMY AWARD WINNER! BEST ACTRESS – MERYL STREEP

Is there anything that Meryl Streep can't do as an actress? One can only marvel at her virtuoso performance as Britain's Margaret Thatcher, the hard-ass ultraconservative who became the first woman prime minister, from 1979 to 1990.

Iron Lady – a kind of female spin on King Lear – is framed with Thatcher – weakened by old age – remembering her youth, her fight for political prominence in a world of men, her marriage. The sharp economy of Phyllida Lloyd's direction allows the incontestably great Streep to take impressionistic snatches of a life and build a woman in full. This is acting of the highest order. –Rolling Stone

Lecture/Seminar Human Frontocentral Theta Oscillations in Relation to Unexpectedness and Outcome Evaluation 2012-04-20 15:30:00
Description

Speaker:  Azadeh HajiHosseini

Previous studies have indicated that, electroencephalographic (EEG) oscillations in the theta frequency range distributed over frontal regions of the scalp reflect a mechanism for error processing. We investigated an alternative hypothesis that such theta oscillations reflect processing of infrequent task-relevant events (not errors per se), which is manifested in the time-domain as the N200 component of the event-related brain potential (ERP). We also showed that N200 and theta energy dissociate in manifesting these cognitive processes so that N200 was a good measure for reward vs. no-reward conditions whereas theta was primarily sensitive to unexpectedness.
