Quantum systems offer considerable promise for developing new technologies, from improving conventional computer hardware using better quantum materials, to building quantum computers to perform tasks that their classical counterparts cannot realistically carry out. I will describe some of the basic challenges to modeling and understanding such quantum systems, as well as to achieving large-scale quantum computing. I will then explain how insights from studying a system's symmetry and topology can help overcome these challenges by providing global constraints on systems' behaviors, and describe how these constraints can be useful both in predicting material properties and in improving the performance of quantum computers.

This seminar explores how magnetic fields surrounding black holes influence the signals we observe from them - both in gravitational waves and in direct images. While most theoretical models treat black holes as isolated objects in vacuum, real astrophysical black holes can exist in magnetized environments, where magnetic fields subtly modify the behaviour of light and gravitational waves near the black hole.

The first part of the seminar examines the visual signatures of magnetized black holes, focusing on how rotation and magnetic fields shape their photon rings and shadows and how these effects connect to the physics of ringdown.

The second part considers how magnetic fields modify the post-merger oscillations of rotating black holes and the implications for gravitational wave observations, including analyses performed with pyRing.

Together, this work links gravitational waves and black hole imaging within a unified framework that accounts for magnetized environments.
