| Lecture/Seminar | Surfing the Flows of the Net ? How Academia can Respond to the Deluge | 2013-03-07 | 13:30:00 |
| Description
|
The ETCL will be hosting a talk by Scott Leslie entitled "Surfing the Flows of the Net – How Academia can Respond to the Deluge" on March 7 from 1:30-2:20pm in Elliott 061.
Here are a brief abstract and bio:
Abstract:
Sector upon sector have already been disrupted since the advent of the internet, and many predict Higher Ed’s turn is next. Using the lens of Castell’s “space of flows” and Benkler’s “permeable” institutions, this talk will look at some specific strategies and tactics that point towards a possible networked future of the university.
Bio:
Scott Leslie is an educational technologist, hacker, and open content/open network activist. For the last decade he managed Open Education projects for BCcampus, and prior to this worked for Mount Royal College and The Banff Centre. He holds a BA in English and Philosophy from the University of Western Ontario, and a MA in Critical and Cultural Theory from the University of Wales, College Cardiff.

| Lecture/Seminar | CSRS Public Lecture Series - Conflict in the Life Stories of Tibetan Buddhist Masters | 2013-03-07 | 16:30:00 |
| Description
|
CSRS Public Lecture Series
Conflict in the Life Stories of Tibetan Buddhist Masters
Speaker: Ben Wood
CSRS Religious Studies Teaching Fellow, Senior Instructor in the Religious Studies Program
Traditional Tibetan monasteries are often conceived of as places of cohesion, harmony and peace, yet some Tibetan literature tells us otherwise. Pre-modern writings by Tibetan monastics reveal a record of monasteries steeped in persistent quarrels, fighting, violence and conspiracy. In this presentation, Dr. Wood examines the record of conflict in Tibetan hagiography, demonstrating the major role it has played in the development of Buddhist virtues such as patience, insight, selfless generosity and skillful means.
Ben Wood holds a PhD in Buddhist studies from the University of Toronto and researches Tibetan Buddhist life-writing.
