Film "TATSUMI" 2013-03-11 21:00:00
Description

TATSUMI

Eric Khoo   Singapore, 2011, 96 min; Japanese with subtitles

Japanese comic books, or manga, typically celebrate vampire-hunting beauties or monsters or technology-crazed teenagers. But to the graphic artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi in the late 1950s, they offered an opportunity to explore darker, more  sophisticated stories about postwar Japan: gekiga.  Director Eric Khoo incorporates five of these stories into an animated tribute that seeks to vivify this artist’s controversial, fearless work. It’s potent stuff, delving into pornography, incest, murder and mutilation in the company of alienated men and unhappy, sometimes cruel women.  –The New York Times

Film "CLOUDBURST" 2013-03-11 19:00:00
Description

Director: Thom Fitzgerald   Canada, 2011, 93 mins

Now here is a genuine crowd-pleaser. It's got laughs, it's got tears, it's got gorgeous Maritime scenery, but most of all, Thom Fitzgerald's film has a radiant performance by Olympia Dukakis as Stella, one of the most memorable female lead characters in a long time. Stella is a foul-mouthed, boisterous, obstreperous 80-year-old lesbian, comfortably ensconced in rural life with her longtime partner Dot (Brenda Fricker). When Dot falls out of bed, a trip to the hospital provides her granddaughter with an opportunity to trick her into an old folk's home, driving the defiant Stella to action. Determined to gain recognition of their relationship, Stella and Dot take off from their home base of Maine for Nova Scotia, planning to elope. What follows are road movie hijinks, powerful emotional reversals and enough belly laughs for five movies, most of them courtesy of the creatively profane Stella. --Vancouver International Film Festival
