Exhibit Margaret Peterson: A Search In Rhythm 2014-04-15 All Day
Description

A Search In Rhythm features the artworks and personal papers of the groundbreaking mid-20th century abstract painter, Margaret Peterson (1903-1997). Peterson had a big vision: to search for the spiritual realm, in rhythm with the artistic aims of Indigenous peoples across the world. Peterson's main medium was egg tempera on plywood panels—striking in size, colour, and form. By showcasing Peterson's possessions, photographs, and writing about her work alongside the works themselves, her vision and search is more fully realized. This is the first in an upcoming series of exhibitions presenting the University of Victoria's Artist Archives and Legacy Art Galleries joint holdings which demonstrates the rich research potential of this recently acquired material.

Film "GLORIA" 2014-04-15 19:00:00
Description

GLORIA

Director: Sebastián Lelio
Chile, 2013, 110 min; Spanish with subtitles; 14A

“Are you always this happy?” Rodolfo asks Gloria, shortly after catching her eye. They are at a nightclub where middle-aged residents of Santiago, Chile, dance and flirt, and where Gloria, in her 50s and long divorced, occasionally goes to attract the attention of a silver-haired Romeo. No, she says, sometimes in the mornings she is sad, and in the afternoons, too.

The great accomplishment of “Gloria,” the Chilean writer-director Sebastián Lelio’s astute, unpretentious and thrillingly humane new film, is that it acknowledges both sides of its heroine’s temperament without judgment or sentimentality. Gloria, played with dignity and gusto by Paulina García, is too complicated for such treatment.

Her life is a familiar jumble of pleasures and frustrations, her personality a weave of moods, foibles and admirable traits. She sometimes drinks too much, and hovers needily around her two grown children. She endures a dull office job. She is immune to self-pity and not averse to emotional risk.

One of the delights of “Gloria” is that its richly detailed realism is fuel for thought: about Chile, about men and women, about the cycles of family life. But Mr. Lelio is interested, above all, in showing Gloria exactly as she is, which is beautiful.

Lecture/Seminar "Is the European Social Model Dead? The Euro Crisis and its Impact on National and European Social Policies" 2014-04-15 14:30:00
Description

There are three different models of economic and monetary union with each different linkages between economic, political and social dynamics. The architecture of monetary union has a huge impact on national industrial relations and welfare state policies. Our hypothesis is that, in the wake of the financial crisis of 2008, and subsequently of the 'euro crisis', a series of political choices, circumstances and windows of opportunity that have enabled  a particular vision of the monetary union (a EMU without political union where the social is the adjustment variable). It was the result of the key role played by the ECB, by the preference of Germany and  also due to the fact that the vast majority of governments in the  were centre/right-wing in 2011 and 2012. We explore the consequences of such model, the role of idea and knowledge and the ongoing fight between different groups of actors to shape the European agenda.

Philippe Pochet, political scientist, is currently General Director of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI). He is Professor at the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), invited lecturer at the Faculté Universitaire Saint Louis, invited professor at the College of ’Europe (Bruges) and currently research scholar at University of Berkeley  California. His main research fields are: social impacts of the monetary union, social dimension of the European Union and social dialogue at sectoral and cross-sectoral levels, the open method of coordination and the new modes of governance, the social challenges of the globalisation process and of climate change.
