Theatre PHOENIX THEATRE: The Skin of Our Teeth @8pm 2013-11-23 20:00:00
Description

THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH

By Thornton Wilder
Directed by Linda Hardy

Enter New Jersey suburbia: home of the perfect middle class family, George, his wife Maggie, their children Gladys and Henry (previously known as Cain?), and their pet dinosaur. George is the inventor of the alphabet, the wheel, and the multiplication tables – he’s the pick of the human race! But can the family survive the ravages of ice ages, global warming, storms, floods, depressions and war? Absurdly funny and very profound, this 1943 Pulitzer Prize-winning satire from the author of Our Town takes us on a wild and raucous tour through the ages.  Revolutionary when first written, The Skin of Our Teeth is a play for our time.

Film "WATERMARK" 2013-11-23 15:00:00
Description

WATERMARK

Directed by Jennifer Baichwal & Edward Burtynsky

Canada, 2012, 91 minutes; rated G

Coming seven years after filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal’s award-winning “Manufactured Landscapes,” which tracked Edward Burtynsky as he photographed the effects of industry in China, “Watermark” returns to the theme of man’s heavy footprint on the landscape. It is an immersive version of his ravishing photographs: thrilling, terrifying and enraging all at once. Baichwal has staged the film as a series of tiny mysteries, dropping us into landscapes and then parsing out clues to help us figure out where we are. She plays with silence and sound like a symphony. “Watermark” is billed as “10 countries, 20 stories – one epic journey.”–The Globe and Mail

Exhibit paradox 2013-11-23 10:00
Description

The notion of paradox provides an apt means of curating seven divergent artists who make up the University of Victoria's Visual Arts department. Despite their widely varying practices, they share fundamental interests in the contradictory nature of our very physical and psychic experiences in, and of, the world around us.

Paradox presents the recent work of the artists teaching in department of Visual Arts of the University of Victoria. The seven faculty members (Daniel Laskarin, Sandra Meigs, Robert Youds, Vikky Alexander, Lynda Gammon, Jennifer Stillwell, and Paul Walde) are mid-career and senior artists with national and international careers. Each artist will be represented by work characteristic of current practice relating to the theme of the paradox implicit in our experience of art.
