Lecture/Seminar Giving Nature a Voice: Legal Rights of Waterways 2013-06-24 13:00:00
Description

This is the fifth, and final, webinar in the POLIS Water Sustainability Project's 2012/2013 Creating a Blue Dialogue webinar series. We will return in the fall of 2013. View archived webinars.

Webinar Summary

The weaknesses of our environmental laws stem in large part from the fact that the overarching legal system treats the natural world as property that can be exploited and degraded, rather than as an integral ecological partner with its own rights to exist and thrive. While our laws focus on the rights and needs of people to flourish, they pay relatively little attention to the same rights on the part of the natural world. They assume that the environment will be protected if humans take from it a little less, and a little less quickly. But this simply slows, never stops, the downward slide. Drawing on case studies from around the world—including the Whanganui River in New Zealand—the guest speakers will discuss the importance of rights of waterways, progress that has been made, and challenges that lie ahead.

Film "Still Mine" 2013-06-24 19:00:00
Description

STILL MINE

Director: Michael McGowan   Canada, 2012, 103 min; PG

FOUR STARS!  A heartfelt and marvelously acted award-winning drama set in New Brunswick. It is based on the true-life story of Craig Morrison, an 89-year-old farmer who suddenly finds himself fighting two battles. Not only is his wife’s dementia presenting challenges, but Craig is confronted by a fusspot building inspector who is determined to stop him from building a new house on his own property. Craig (James Cromwell) presides over several thousand acres and has been self-sufficient all his life. And so, when it becomes clear that Irene (Genevieve Bujold), his beloved wife of 61 years, is now unsafe in the two-storey farmhouse where they raised their seven children, the land-rich but cash-poor Craig decides to build them a new, one-level home nearby, one with beautiful views of the Bay of Fundy.  Although in many ways a small story, Still Mine is a solid triumph for serious cinema. It’s the best film yet from veteran Canadian director Michael McGowan (One Week, Saint Ralph). Most of all, Mine is a marvelous love story: unsentimental, well observed, and rooted in these two unique people. This film is a distinct pleasure to recommend. –Monday Magazine
