Lecture/Seminar The Roots of Russian Western Policy with Derek Fraser 2017-04-21 12:00:00
Description

The Roots of Russian Western Policy

WHEN: Friday, April 21st
TIME: 12:00 - 1:00 pm
WHERE: Sedgewick C168

DESCRIPTION: President Trump is considering accepting a Russian zone of influence in Eastern Europe in order to reach reconciliation with Russia.  The President is however unlikely to achieve his goal. What Russia is seeking is more than a zone of influence - it wants to be recognized as a great power equal in status with the United States, with a veto on all questions affecting Russian security, including on the activities of the NATO and the EU.
Because of the far-reaching nature of Russian demands, tensions with Russia are likely to last several years. These tensions can be more dangerous than during the closing phase of the Cold War because the old rules of conduct have largely disappeared. What is now required is to keep sanctions, to strengthen deterrence, and to look for areas of agreement, including on nuclear arms reductions and new rules of military engagement.
