Lecture/Seminar The Crisis of the Spirit and the Globalization of Addiction 2017-03-02 16:30:00
Description

Presentation by David Seljak, CSRS Visiting Lecturer
Canadian psychologist Bruce Alexander had defined the globalization of addiction as a result of a widespread “poverty of the spirit.” At the same time, Pope Francis analyses the despair and unhappiness of modern society as a spiritual crisis that leads to self-centredness, materialism, and consumerism. This unhappiness has fueled a twin crisis of social injustice and ecological destruction. Dr. Seljak will outline the connections between the analyses of Dr. Alexander, a wholly secular thinker, and Pope Francis, both of whom see the suffering created by conditions in the modern world as a spiritual crisis.
