Who Owns Antiquity; and What Purpose Does Owning Antiquity Serve? The Role of Artifacts in Contemporary Politics
Sarah Wilkinson, CSRS Ethics and Culture Graduate Student Fellow, Department of Political Science, UVic

Should Britain return the Elgin Marbles, acquired two centuries ago under Turkish rule, to the Parthenon? Did Taliban-ruled Afghanistan have the right to demolish the 1,500-year-old Bamiyan Buddhas? Do the millennia-old remains of the Kennewick Man belong to the Umatilla people, or to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that unearthed them? Is Germany obliged to repatriate the dubiously acquired bust of Nefertiti? In this lecture, Sarah Wilkinson focuses on the manner in which groups use cultural property to enhance their political status and further claims to self-determination.

Sarah Wilkinson completed her BSc in biochemistry at the University of Ottawa; her BA and MA in political science at Carleton University; and is now in her fourth year of a PhD in political science at the University of Victoria. Currently working on the relation between self-determination and claims to cultural property, Wilkinson’s past work has focused on the role of federalism in the evolution of abortion rights in the United States as well as the accommodation of minorities in France and Canada.
