Lecture/Seminar "The Old Gods and the New": The Politics of Ethnic and Religious Identity in Restoration England 2017-03-26 16:30:00

Presentation by John Trafford, Winnifred Lonsdale Graduate Student Fellow.
Early modern England was a politically messy place, and it was never a foregone conclusion that the country’s politics would develop into the form that we know today. This presentation examines the conflicts between religious and ethnic identities in the tumultuous period of English political history in the late seventeenth century. It will explore early modern England’s anti-Catholic culture, and the ‘ancient liberties’ of the English people. Demonstrating the interconnectedness of religious and ethnic identities in this time and place will help us to understand the extent to which church and state were unified, and the impact this had on notions of ‘Englishness.’
