Description

Greek and Roman Studies Department presents a seminar by Dr. Wade Richardson, Adjunct Professor, GRS Department , University of Victoria.
Friday, February 28th at 2:30 pm in Clearihue B415.

"Plautus and the Antillean Tody"

This topic traces the history of one Latin word’s 2200-year journey from the pages of a Greek-inspired early Roman comedy, where it stood as a metaphor for a thin prostitute, to its installation in today’s guides as an improbable beauty of the subtropical avian world. It is a case study of how, before our subject became a bird, it existed in our minds as a word, whose fortunate status as a curiosity secured mention in the entries of a classical epitomist, until such time as it could be found and extracted by the naturalist-scholars of the Enlightenment. Our word shares in only one of the many thousands of modern zoological binomial classifications formed out of equal caprice and chance; but it offers an apt perspective on the fates of a Classical verbal relic through its history of textual transmission, recovery and repurposed use.
