Lecture/Seminar The Materials-Based Bias Shift: A consistent and mysterious conservative bias for paintings 2013-04-12 15:00:00
Description

Speaker: Kaitlyn Fallow

Abstract:

A number of factors can influence response bias in the context of recognition memory tasks, including experimental instructions, individual differences, and properties of the stimuli used. This talk will outline an ongoing series of recognition memory experiments conducted with words and paintings, all of which have yielded one consistent finding: people exhibit a significant conservative response bias for paintings. Experiments in our lab have found that this bias holds both when participants study and are tested on a combination of paintings and words as well as when only paintings are studied, and seems to exist independently of differences in accuracy between the two types of items. The bias also persists in the face of various manipulations, such as incorporating orienting tasks at study and providing accuracy feedback at test. Although this conservative bias is replicable and consistent in numerous contexts, tests of three different hypotheses regarding the mechanisms underlying the bias have yielded little insight into its causes; thus, it remains somewhat of a mystery.
