Lecture/Seminar Self-Constructed Social Engagement: proposed autism intervention by Joseph Sheppard 2013-04-26 15:00:00

Speaker: Joseph Sheppard

Joseph will be proposing a possible master’s thesis intervention design for persons with autism. This intervention examines what persons with autism are able to do well and their need for self-determination including their needs for social relatedness, autonomy, and skill competency and explores how those expressions may be harnessed as a compensatory strategy to overcome some barriers and deficits in autistic social engagement. Themes that will be explored are how pathological fixations may help a person with autism become more self-aware within social relations, how semantic memory processes may compensate for deficits in episodic processes, how it may be possible to increase affect related to a feeling of connection to others, how technology may be used to administer sophisticated autism interventions, and possible methodologies for analyzing the efficacy of such interventions.
