Lecture/Seminar "Regenerative Medicine Strategies in Spinal Cord Injury" 2014-05-16 12:00:00

Please join the next Division of Medical Sciences Seminar Series with guest speaker Dr. Molly Schoichet, Professor, University of Toronto.

Regenerative Medicine strategies comprise stem cell transplantation and endogenous stem cell stimulation.  We have investigated these strategies in the context of the central nervous system and specifically after traumatic injury to the spinal cord, stroke and in blindness.  The focus of this seminar will be on spinal cord injury repair strategies.

To promote greater cell survival and integration with the host tissue after transplantation, we have designed a hydrogel comprised of hyaluronan and methyl cellulose that itself has a pro-survival effect.  Chemical modification with cell adhesive peptides and growth factors further enhances cell survival and functional recovery.

In order to stimulate the endogenous cells, we have designed a composite delivery system of growth factors dispersed in a hydrogel that enables controlled, sustained and local release of growth factors into the injured cord.   This has resulted in tissue repair with a minimally-invasive strategy.

Overall, these strategies demonstrate the importance of cell survival, integration and endogenous cell stimulation for success in regenerative medicine strategies.
