He is known as the “father of Canadian photojournalism,” quietly clicking with the "eye of an artist, the concentration of a surgeon, and the reflexes of a cat." From Trudeau’s mischievous slide down the banister on Parliament Hill, to Ben Johnson’s momentary thrill of triumph at winning the 100 meter dash, to the accusing glance of a child of the Chernobyl disaster, Ted Grant has created thousands of iconic images over the past six decades, distilling our world into single, expanding moments.
The Silent Observer features Grant's latest work, a continued exploration of healers, this time from the point of view of medical interns. Grant captures these young men and women in classrooms, operating rooms and rural clinics, from moments of intense concentration to playful laughter, as they journey from student to physician.
Ted Grant is the only photographer to hold both Gold and Silver medals for Photographic Excellence from the National Film Board of Canada. He has published eight books, lectured at prestigious universities and taught courses for the School of Journalism at Carleton University. He has acted as Photographic Coordinator for the Pan American and Commonwealth Games, and for the World Athletic Championships in Edmonton. In 2008, he was presented an Honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from the University of Victoria.

THE MAROWITZ HAMLET
By William Shakespeare and Charles Marowitz
Guest Directed by Charles Marowitz
Set and Lighting Design by Bryan Kenney
Costume Design by Michelle Lo
Stage Manager Denay Amaral
Using the same poetic language, Charles Marowitz reinvents Shakespeare’s classic, revealing the layers of insanity in a young man’s vengeance. Notorious for his Shakespearean collages, the acclaimed Broadway and West End playwright, director, and critic presents his radical reinterpretation on the Phoenix mainstage.

“AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT!” –Austin Chronicle
Walter, the world's biggest Muppet fan, and his friends discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for oil. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter and friends help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a casino tribute band, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate.

Director: Charles Wilkinson Canada, 2011, 80 minutes; DVD
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! This award-winning documentary on the costs of energy extraction in North Western Canada is a long, hard look at our technological affluence and its price. We hear from climate change experts, energy policy scholars and business professionals. This is a generously inquisitive film, made with an open mind and a fierce sense of commitment. It's these two qualities that combine to make its conclusion so powerfully convincing. –Vancouver International Film Festival

As anti-violence activists in our paid and unpaid work it is important to be able to hold an anti-oppression stance that addresses oppressive practices of violence - but it is also important that all violence isn't conflated in this work. In this talk Vikki will differentiate human rights and social justice, which are connected but very different projects. We'll look at torture and political violence, as understood by the UN and explore why it is important to hold these acts separate from other forms of politicalized violence, such as a rape culture. Often language obscures more than it reveals, and conflating government sanctioned violence with other violence can result in dismissive, mutualizing and impotent responses to acts of violence by the state and governments. At the same time, seeing rape as outside of politicalized violence is also problematic. As activists how can we be most effective in taking on oppression on all fronts? Vikki will take a run at all of these questions, while outlining the need for a position against all state sanctioned executions and torture. About Vikki Reynolds: Vikki is a therapist/activist whose experience includes clinical supervision and therapy with refugees and survivors of torture, mental health and substance abuse counsellors, anti-violence counsellors, and working alongside transgendered and queer communities. Vikki has been the Therapeutic Supervisor of Peak House since 2002,and was a Family Therapist at Peak for many years. Vikki's published work addresses social justice, sustainability, ethics, and trauma. She is an Instructor with VCC, UBC and City University where she received the Deans Award for Distinguished Instruction. UVicSJS on Facebook and Twitter
