| Lecture/Seminar | Prof. Elio Lo Cascio | 2012-03-19 | 19:30:00 |
| Description
|
Classical Association of Vancouver Island
The Fifth Meeting of the 2011/12 Session will be held on Monday, March 19th at 7:30 p.m., University Centre A180 (Senate Room).
Professor Elio Lo Cascio
University of Rome “La Sapienza”
will present a lecture entitled
Civium capita: the debate on the demography of Roman Italy from the third century BC to the second century AD
Roman census figures appear to show a massive leap in the citizen population from 900,000 in 70-69 BC to 4-5 million recorded for Augustan Rome in the Res gestae. Some scholars (“low counters”) have argued that the Augustan figures include all citizens (men, women and children). Others (“high counters”) have argued that, as in the Republican figures, only adult males are recorded. The lecture will examine the arguments regarding the interpretation of the census figures. At stake here is the way in which to reconstruct not only the major economic, social and even political issues of the Late Republic and Early Empire, but also the demographic development of the Italy in the very long run from Roman times to the nineteenth century and the determinants of this development.

| Exhibit | The Silent Observer | 2012-03-19 | 07:30:00 |
| Description
|
He is known as the “father of Canadian photojournalism,” quietly clicking with the "eye of an artist, the concentration of a surgeon, and the reflexes of a cat." From Trudeau’s mischievous slide down the banister on Parliament Hill, to Ben Johnson’s momentary thrill of triumph at winning the 100 meter dash, to the accusing glance of a child of the Chernobyl disaster, Ted Grant has created thousands of iconic images over the past six decades, distilling our world into single, expanding moments.
The Silent Observer features Grant's latest work, a continued exploration of healers, this time from the point of view of medical interns. Grant captures these young men and women in classrooms, operating rooms and rural clinics, from moments of intense concentration to playful laughter, as they journey from student to physician.
Ted Grant is the only photographer to hold both Gold and Silver medals for Photographic Excellence from the National Film Board of Canada. He has published eight books, lectured at prestigious universities and taught courses for the School of Journalism at Carleton University. He has acted as Photographic Coordinator for the Pan American and Commonwealth Games, and for the World Athletic Championships in Edmonton. In 2008, he was presented an Honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from the University of Victoria.

| Lecture/Seminar | Webinar: The Water-Energy Nexus | 2012-03-19 | 09:00:00 |
| Description
|
This is the fourth webinar in the POLIS Water Sustainability Project''s 2011/2012 Creating a Blue Dialogue webinar series.
WEBINAR SUMMARY
The interconnections and interdependencies between water and energy are rapidly becoming a priority area of focus in British Columbia and across North America. In this webinar, leading researchers will provide a tour of these priority and emerging issues related to the water-energy nexus in sectors across Canada and the United States.
Researcher and policy analyst Ben Parfitt will draw on initial research into water and energy use in B.C., and some emerging areas of concern relating to the water-energy nexus in the province, such as strains on B.C.’s hydroelectric system, escalating water use in the resource sector, and challenges and opportunities in the agricultural and municipal sectors. Speaker Carol Maas will then focus on water conservation and efficiency as a possible path to realizing future energy savings for municipalities in Ontario. Guest speaker Heather Cooley will discuss current issues in the American West, including the energy implications of desalination and water requirements for electricity generation.

| Film | A Dangerous Method | 2012-03-19 | 19:00:00 |
| Description
|
Director: David Cronenberg Canada, 2011, 100 minutes; 14A
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Viggo Mortensen, Keira Knightley
FOUR STARS! A suave chamber piece: a series of glimpses of two 20th-century intellectual titans, and the story of a remarkable woman who history had swallowed up, brought into the light again. –The Globe and Mail
On the eve of World War I, Zurich and Vienna are the setting for a dark tale of sexual and intellectual discovery. Drawn from true-life events, A Dangerous Method takes a glimpse into the turbulent relationships between fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender), his mentor Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen) and Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), the troubled, beautiful young woman who comes between them. Into the mix comes Otto Gross (Vincent Cassel), a debauched psychoanalyst who is determined to push the boundaries. In this exploration of sensuality, ambition and deceit set the scene for the pivotal moment when Jung, Freud and Sabina come together and split apart, forever changing the face of modern thought. –Sony Classics

| Lecture/Seminar | Revolution in post-Red Bengal: Informal Workers Fight Back | 2012-03-19 | 12:30:00 |
| Description
|
Speaker: Supriya Routh, PhD Candidate at the Faculty of Law, University of Victoria.
Labour rights enjoy constitutional status in India. The Constitution of India provides for fundamental rights such as freedom of expressionand freedom of association, and labour welfare goals such as right to work, provision for living wage, appropriate conditions of work, maternity benefit, old-age assistance etc. However, in absence of state initiative informal workers in India are deprived of constitutionally guaranteed rights. Incidentally, the majority of workers in India are informal workers. Therefore, the majority of workers in the country remain excluded from labour welfare benefits. Informal workers'' organizations such as SEWA, KKPKP, Chintan etc. fills in this vacuum between constitutional guarantees and its actual realization for informal workers. By providing comprehensive services from vocational training to housing facilities, informal workers'' organizations enable workers to enjoy constitutional socio-economic rights. In this talk I will discuss the formation of a trade union of informal workers in Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India, in order to argue that it is possible for a trade union of informal workers to realise constitutionally guaranteed dignified life for their members in absence of state initiative in this regard.
