Vimy at 100

The Battle for Vimy Ridge and the Making of Canada

Dr. David Zimmerman will be speaking on the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge, a battle so significant for the making of our country that the land on which the memorial stands was ceded to Canada by the French government.

Why do we commemorate? What does it mean to mark historical anniversaries? Come to Hermann’s Jazz Club for an enjoyable evening of investigation and discussion in a classy, convivial atmosphere. Doors open at 5pm; talks begin at 6:30. Reserve your seats online at  http://Eventbrite.ca or clio@uvic.ca.

Exhibit The Mystery of Grafton Tyler Brown: Race, Art, and Landscape in 19th Century British Columbia 2017-04-04 10:00
Description

We know Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was one of the first professional landscape artists to work in the Pacific Northwest. His few regional paintings that survive offer vivid windows into the world of 1880s Victoria and British Columbia. Yet, how did this African American artist succeed at a time when racial prejudice prevented most Blacks from entering any skilled profession? Guest curated by Dr. John Lutz (History, UVic) with Emerald Johnstone Bedell and Caroline Riedel. Created in partnership with UVIC Legacy Art Galleries and UVIC History Department. With conservation support from the Royal BC Museum.

Lecture/Seminar Brand Breaker: Consumer Trust, and How it Makes (or Breaks) a Brand 2017-04-04 All Day
Description

Trust: it determines decisions we make in the grocery store, how we choose to travel, and the clothes we wear. It impacts what brands we recommend to our friends and where we choose to work, live, play – and study.

So what are the implications for brands and businesses?

Join us over breakfast as Dr. Saul Klein presents the 2016 findings of Gustavson’s Brand Trust Index, a survey showing how four different types of trust impact consumer perception and decision-making across Canada last year. Dr. Klein will draw on examples from the school to illustrate the power of these various types of trust.

Other Embrace Aging - focus groups 2017-04-04 14:00:00
Description

The vision for a “precision health” strategy is based on the rapid translation of research discoveries to improve patient care and health outcomes. To effectively tackle the complexities of chronic conditions and cognitive disorders and to make advances in their prevention and treatment, researchers are focusing on measuring an individual’s health repeatedly over time to obtain more accurate assessments of changes in health and wellness. However, this research is very demanding on participants. We are interested in discussing major research questions, preferred modes of responding, and design factors associated with recruitment and retention including frequency of contact, length of survey, and preference for feedback. Please join one of our focus groups, meet some of our key researchers, and help us define the next generation of research!

Film PATERSON 2017-04-04 19:00:00
Description

PATERSON

Director: Jim Jarmusch; USA, 2016, 118 min; PG

A gem. Adam Driver stars as a bus-driving poet (or poetry-writing bus driver) in this Zen fugue from American director Jim Jarmusch. Driver has never been more in-the-moment. Paterson feels like the most intimate, heartfelt film from Jarmusch in a long while. It’s like a stone skipping across a pond, surprising us with widening ripples of revelation. It’s a one-of-a-kind, strangely moving film, and as close as cinema gets to pure poetry. --Maclean’s

ADAM DRIVER’S PERFORMANCE IS EXQUISITE. –Seattle Times

Jarmusch has actually remade "Groundhog Day" as a work of spiritual ecstasy.Boston Globe

A small miracle of a film, one that is both intellectually dazzling and emotionally provocative.San Francisco Chronicle

A LOVELY FABLE. –Time Out
