Film George Orwell's 1984 2017-05-09 19:00:00

Director: Michael Radford, UK, 1984, 115 min; 14A.  Cast: John Hurt, Suzanna Hamilton, Richard Burton

Oceania is at war with Eurasia; Big Brother watches from every wall. Loudspeakers blare party propaganda on every street. It's 1984 in a London where Winston Smith (John Hurt) works rewriting old newspaper stories to fit the latest corrected truth. When a fellow worker, Julia (Suzanna Hamilton) passes him a secret note with the words 'I love you' they begin a dangerous, illicit relationship, defying the party and Big Brother with their love. Sniffing around suspiciously is the brutally cynical O'Brien (Richard Burton) from the inner party...And the Thought Police are everywhere.

A chilling vision of political correctness taken to its ultimate, bleak conclusion, George Orwell's novel of post war England was, on its publication in 1948, a wail of despair at what the world might have been coming to. Nazism and Communism with a dose of Fascism all are recognisable in Michael Radford's brilliant evocation of a world in which love is illegal, Big Brother is omnipresent and newspeak is eradicating the meaning of words. "War is peace / freedom is slavery / ignorance is strength..." blares the ever-audible loudspeaker system throughout the land. Doublethink is the new principle.--Urban Cinefile

Exhibit The Mystery of Grafton Tyler Brown: Race, Art, and Landscape in 19th Century British Columbia 2017-05-09 10:00

We know Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) was one of the first professional landscape artists to work in the Pacific Northwest. His few regional paintings that survive offer vivid windows into the world of 1880s Victoria and British Columbia. Yet, how did this African American artist succeed at a time when racial prejudice prevented most Blacks from entering any skilled profession? Guest curated by Dr. John Lutz (History, UVic) with Emerald Johnstone Bedell and Caroline Riedel. Created in partnership with UVIC Legacy Art Galleries and UVIC History Department. With conservation support from the Royal BC Museum.
