April 8 to September 16, 2017

Origin Stories

First Nations Prints and Carvings

Guest curated by Jackson McDermott (Dene/Cree) with Gillian Booth and Katie Hughes.

As Canada celebrates 150 years since Confederation, the Legacy Art Galleries respectfully acknowledges a much longer history by presenting First Nations narratives that move beyond limited settler versions of history. Through prints and carvings chosen by guest curator, Jackson McDermott (Dene/Cree) from the Fort Nelson First Nation, the exhibition explores centuries-old stories that continue to live in the people, communities, nations and lands of this place.

Film I, DANIEL BLAKE 2017-06-29 19:00:00

Director: Ken Loach, UK, 2016, 101 min; 14A

Winner of the Palme D’Or in Cannes, veteran British director Ken Loach doesn’t break any new cinematic ground, but he draws a dynamite performance from Dave Johns as a middle-aged carpenter who has a Kafkaesque encounter with the state welfare system after he’s injured on the job. Witty, tender and oh so relevant, it’s a lot more fun than it sounds. –Maclean’s

“A film of empathy, grace and wit that goes a long way to explaining the populist anger so emblematic of these times.”--Toronto Star

“This new Ken Loach landmark sums up everything that has kept his muckraking motor running for decades. An old-school social realist, the 80-year-old filmmaker again speaks up for the exploited lower classes.” –Rolling Stone

“One of Loach’s finest films, a drama of tender devastation that tells its story with an unblinking neorealist simplicity that goes right back to the plainspoken purity of Vittorio De Sica. It’s a work of scalding and moving relevance.” –Variety

Theatre Walking the Journeys of Arriving, Belonging and Becoming 2017-06-29 14:00:00

Walking the Journeys of Arriving, Belonging and Becoming

When: Thursday, June 29th

Time: 2-3:30pm

Where: UVic Quad – Outdoors, in front of the McPherson Library

We would like to invite you to a live interactive theatre performance play which allows important perspectives and reflections on the eve of Canada’s 150 celebration. This production is presented in partnership with: The Office of the Vice President Academic and Provost; Associate Vice President, Student Affairs; the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Department of Theatre; the Centre for Global Studies; the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives; UVic Equity and Human Rights Office and the Learning and Teaching Centre.

The play critically explores newcomers, immigrants and refugees’ narratives of relocation, resilience, settlement, and integration. The actors are youth from various ethnic and culturally diverse backgrounds who will share their stories of their lived and living experiences in the worlds of immigration, migration and settlement. It also involves a “talk back” session, after the play, to engage the audience in interactive theatre dialogue.

The Director of this play is Nigerian born Taiwo Okunola Afolabi and the Artistic Team consists of Annie Konstantinova (Israeli), Jasmine Li (Chinese American), Megan Chandler (Guyanese Canadian), Olivia Wheeler (Canadian and Eurasian), Samer Alkhatib (Syrian), Thiptawan Uchai (Thai), Tianxu Zhao (Chinese) and Victoria Stark (Canadian).

We hope to see you there to participate in fostering inclusive community-building at UVic and in supporting community-based theatre as a positive intervention!

For more information:

Media are welcome to attend and film the performance.
